Is there an FAQ for this group? I'm trying to resolve a problem using OE6
as newsreader.
Thanks,
John

Not really. A Find by subject, or a Google, but no FAQ's. What's the
question?

First: Thanks for asking! You can't imagine how often we see the same
questions over and over and over...

There is no official FAQ for this group. Google Groups is a handy
interface for searching this and virtually every other public newsgroup.
Of course, a web search will also provide lots of information.

Default FAQ

Thanks for the replies. My problem just started recently whereas the group
details under Folders shows unread messages, but there are no unread
messages in the messages pane. I have had isolated occurrences of this in
the past, but every group I subscribe to is now showing unread messages. I
have synced all groups, set sync to All Messages, have no rules or ignored
users. I've increased the message downloads to 500 and even after using
Catch up on all groups, the next sync will most likely show unread messages.

TIA,

John

Tools | Options | Read - Uncheck: Get XXX Headers at a time. All new headers
will be downloaded in the future. You may have to kick start it and go to
Tools | Options | Maintenance | Clean Up Now. Select the newsgroup at the
top and then Reset. This will remove all your messages and then download all
that are available on the server.

If you want to download newsgroups, but don't want hundreds, or thousands,
of messages, you can create a message rule such as this:

Tools | Message Rules | News.

Box 1: Where the message was sent more than days ago
Box 2: Delete it & Stop processing more rules
Box 3: Click on "Days" and choose the # of days you want.
Name the rule.

When you go to, or subscribe to a newsgroup, it will only download the
messages for the number of days you selected.

Opinions on this vary, but in Tools | Accounts | News | Properties |
General, I have Include this account when checking for new messages checked.
When OE automatically checks for mail, (however often you have it set for),
it will also download any new news messages at the same time. No Sync
needed.

Default FAQ

Is that status bar also showing one or more message not downloaded? If
you aren't seeing the status bar enable it in View, Layout.

There's a bug/quirk in OE often referred to as "Ghost Messages", where
OE thinks there are some messages on the news server that it can't
download. Once it hits a newsgroup, it seems to slowly increase the
number of messages. It seems to take the news server administrator to
rebuild in the server indexes for the problem to go away.

Default FAQ

All,
Thanks for the info. I've cleaned up and reset, and reloaded all
messages. So far, so good. I'll know in a day or so if that solved the
problem. I'll also keep an eye out for the server "bug". I may have to
migrate to a new newsreader if this continues, but I'm just so used to
OE......I guess that's Bill's idea! ;^)
Thanks Again,
John
