how do i alter settings to prevent timing out when sending large files?

more often a limit imposed by your ISP, you cant change the maximum file
size they impose, you can check
tools
accounts
mailaccountname
advance
break apart message larger than xxxxxxxKB

to make OE sent the messages as segments

Default time out when sending large files

They can be large enough that they will never send, but.............

Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Advanced. Move the Time-out slider
all the way to the right.

And most important:

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
