Default One ISP account - Two computers

Windows XP SP2

One ISP account Two computers

Question 1
I have a desktop computer that is set up for the Internet and a mail account
(OE). I have a new laptop for which I have to do the same thing.

I think I first have to set up the laptop with the same master account
information from the Desktop's ISP. Then the next thing would be to set up a
mail sub account for the Laptop.

If that's correct, do I set up this sub account on the Desktop, or directly
on the Laptop? (account: different user name, different password).

Question: 2
When both computers used the same master account information during this
setup, does that mean each machine can go to directly to the internet or to
get mail, or do we need identity switching between accounts?

Question 3:
If I were using the internet to make comparisons on some information, could
I have both the laptop and the desktop connecting at the same time?

If you use a dial-up connection, you cannot connect both computers (on independent) phone cables at
the same time. Most ISP's will cut you off if you dial in two computers at the same time. This is
to prevent others from using your account. Of course you can create and pay for two accounts.

If you want both computers on-line at the same time, you will have to network them together. Use
ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) if you have a dial-up connection. Then both computers use the
modem in one of the computers.

If you use a broad-band connection, you need a router between the computers and the broad-band
modem.

With a network, both computers can use the Internet at the same time. However, the email is a bit
more tricky. You can have the same email setup on both machines, but one will always be picking up
the mail first and the other will not find any mail. Or if you leave mail on the server, both can
get it, but you will get a lot of duplicates. Two email accounts, or identities, works out better.

Now give us a few more details of your setup and we will give more details on how to do it.

How OE stores your data
http://www.insideoe.com/files/store.htm#storemain

Assuming POP3 account:

A1. Set up the account in OE the same way on both machines (but see below).

A2. The "master account" is the mail server where the messages reside, so each machine accesses this server independent of the other. IOW, OE on the laptop isn't aware of OE on the desktop.

A3. Yes.

I'd suggest that you configure the account in OE per the following:

On both machines = Tools Accounts Mail [account] Properties Advanced Delivery Leave a copy of messages on the server (check)

On both machines = Tools Accounts Mail [account] Properties Advanced Delivery Remove from the server when deleted from Deleted Items (optional)

On only one machine = Tools Accounts Mail [account] Properties Advanced Delivery Remove from the server after XX days (check, and select appropriate number of days)

Road Runner? Your posting NNTP IP address says, "Yes".

Cable doesn't use connection software. You should only need to set up a
mail client with the sub account information if all you want the laptop
to do is access the email sub account.

Question: 2
When both computers used the same master account information during this
setup, does that mean each machine can go to directly to the internet or to

Unless you don't a cable connection, you don't need the master account
information on both computers.

Question 3:
If I were using the internet to make comparisons on some information, could
I have both the laptop and the desktop connecting at the same time?

If you truly have Road Runner cable service, you would either need an
extra IP address (if Road Runner offers such; I know that Comcast does),
or a broadband router.

DSL is slightly different, but dial up usually does not permit
simultaneous connections.

In the future, it would help to know the ISP you are using. The answers
to your questions are variable, depending upon the type of connection,
and whether you are trying to access the same email account from
multiple computers, or different accounts on each computer.
