Default OE sending spam by itself?

I just got warned by my isp that complaints have come to them that I was
sending out porn adverts to them. I am not....
Everyone on my mailing list got them...and it has happened frequently.
What can I do to stop this.
Should I go to a different email system like gmail....hotmail...etc?
Is this a virus problem?...I have updated avast.....firewall
on...etc...running windows xp.

Contact your ISP and talk to them about it. This is not an OE, nor any other
e-mail client problem.

BTY. If you feel you must post to more than one group, please do not
multi-post. Crosspost instead via New Post | Tools | Select Newsgroups. This
way if a post is replied to in one group, it will also be replied to in the
other group(s).

But even crossposting is seldom necessary since those of us that check
posts, do so in more than one newsgroup. Thank you.

Rick

You most likely have been tagged by a virus or related bug. Or your network,
if you have one, was hacked. You need to check these issues out first. I had
our wireless home network hacked last year, and didn't know until we got a
violation of TOS notice from my ISP. It was a mess to clean up.

Hi Rick
Bruce is quite right -
It is important you contact your ISP re this.
There is a good chance that your computer is now what is called a 'Zombie'
Below some info -

Good luck

The good news is that your IP address is not listed in any of the more
popular DNSBLs, not even SpamCop. However, MSOE normally doesn't send
email on its own. The kind of problem you describe is usually the result
of infection by a spamming Trojan. AV programs are not always good as
spotting Trojans. You do need to make a thorough analysis of your
computers. See if running 'netstat -a' shows anything, or get TCPView
from Sysinternals (http://www.sysinternals.com/).

If you have a wireless network, you need to use WPA encryption, or
better. While it isn't common, it has been done; spamming through
somebody's insecure wireless LAN.

There is an outside possibility that your ISP is mistaken. But don't
just assume that is so. You've got to check your equipment. Twice. Make
_certain_ it is clean before assuming that the ISP is wrong.

I just ran your posting IP address against my MTA logs. No matches for
the last three, or four months. I do see Shawcable IP addresses in those
logs from time to time, though.
