I subscribe to several usenet providers and on some, have trouble refreshing
the list of available groups. When connected to news.microsoft.com for instance, resetting the list [tools - newsgroups - reset list] goes through within seconds. When connected through news.teranews.com it can take several hours to complete. there are something like 75000 groups on this server. OE will start downloading the list of groups and when it gets to about 55,000 the download stalls and the disc access light keeps flashing. Task manager shows that msimn.exe is taking about 97% of the cpu time. Sometimes it will complete normally and others it will keep hanging even after letting it run overnight. Any ideas what this is and how to keep it from hanging? The teranews server has dropped some of its groups so I wanted to refresh the list. TIA - Oppie |

Try doing a File, Folders, Compact ALL before doing the Reset List.
The newsgroup list is stored in the Folders.DBX file. That file may have become bloated -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Oppie" wrote in message ... Michael,
Did as you wrote. OE now opens faster which is nice but the reset list hang-up is still there. I got up to 54351 groups (and most of them are bogus which ticks me off...) and the file to file animation above the group count freezes. Trying to do anything in OE gives Not Responding in top bar. Any other ideas? I have seen this on other machines with Win98 and OE6 as well as my main machine which is XP Pro, HP/Compaq D220mt. Also another item. [tools - Options - maintenance - Clean up now] only seems to clean up the newsgroups that I am subscribed to. Any groups browsed without subscribing leave dbx files behind. Is there any way to automatically clean these or must I manually delete any large dbx files? Thanks again, Oppie "Michael Santovec" wrote in message ... The problem has been around for some time with news server that host many
newsgroups. One added thing to try (if running Windows XP) is to start the system in "Safe Mode with Networking support" which blocks many 3rd party programs from running. Then try the reset of the newsgroup list. For added info about the problem, see the info at this link: http://www.insideoe.com/tips/slownews.htm -- Jim Pickering, MVP, Outlook Express https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/pr...8-1171988A62D6 Please deliver feedback to the newsgroup, so that others can be helped. Restarted XP in safe mode with network support - added benefit, Trend Micro
antivirus did not run. Still hung up though in resetting list. sigh The insideOE link looks interesting - thanks. will read through it. In the mean time, I'm going to leave the system trying to reset the list overnight. Sometimes it does complete. "Jim Pickering" wrote in message ... Let us know if you get it. Large newsgroup lists require an awful lot of
memory to download so if you let it run for an extended period, it may work out. Let's hope so. -- Jim Pickering, MVP, Outlook Express https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/pr...8-1171988A62D6 Please deliver feedback to the newsgroup, so that others can be helped.
