Default Messages on server!

Yes, it should be empty. But on the other hand, if there was a problem like
we have been trying to fix, at worst, the last 15 days should be repeatedly
downloaded, and not two years of messages.

That's why I feel it will most likely be an ISP issue. Those messages more
than 15 days old, shouldn't be on the server at all.

You said to download the message after deleting the Pop3uid folder, and
there are some 16,000 messages that haven't downloaded yet. Am I correct
that if I remove the check mark from "leave messages on the server" then
after the download completes then the server should be empty. Correct?
Thanks for your help.

You removed the check mark to Leave a copy on the server and you still
get the messages?

I believe this will end up being an issue with your ISP. If you want, you
can try one more thing that I can think of.

You may have a damaged identity especially if it is the default Main
Identity. File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create a new one and test
it. If all is well, you can import your messages from the old identity
and delete it.

How to Create and Use Identities in Outlook Express
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=209169

Since you have been downloading and deleting so many messages, you would
be well advised to compact your folders. And since you are having
problems, I would suggest you back the message up first.

If you are not using an up-to-date version of XP/SP2:

Backup & Resto
http://www.insideoutlookexpress.com/backup/

If you have an up-to-date XP/SP2, download this patch. Among other
things, it will create a backup of your dbx files in your Recycle Bin
automatically when you compact.

Patch KB918766:
http://tinyurl.com/mx3r2

This patch addresses some of the issues that were caused by KB911567.

Address Book problems.
Unsent templates appearing as sent.
Manually compacting will now reset the registry counter to Zero in
WinXP/SP2 and also sends a copy of your dbx files to the recycle bin as a
temporary backup.

To complete the fix for .eml templates, a registry change is needed. See:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918766

Tom Koch also has this information at his site, along with a downloadable
Zip file to do the registry change for you. See:

Your settings are fine, although the least amount of days is best.

I assume you didn't delete the Pop3uidl.dbx file yet since you ask
about
deleting the Inbox messages.

They should be downloaded again, but let's play it safe. Create a new
folder and move all your Inbox message to it. Assuming you get them
downloaded again, you can just delete the entire new folder. Much
easier
then deleting duplicates in the same folder.

Do I delete all the messages in my INBOX or just get the duplicates

The Pop3uidl.dbx file is probably corrupt. Delete it as per the
instructions below. You will get all the messages downloaded one
more
time, but it should be good after that.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the
location
of your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the
folder location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V
will
put the location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files.
Otherwise, write the location down and navigate to it in Windows
Explorer.

In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K03, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by
default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer,
you
must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control
Panel
| Tools | Folder Options | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools |
Folder Options | View.

With OE closed, find the DBX file in question {Pop3uidl.dbx} and
delete it. A new one will be created automatically when you open
OE.

General precautions for Outlook Express:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually
become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and
move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep
user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as
is
feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually
while working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no
folders
are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online
in
the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch
anything until the compacting is completed.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a
redundant
layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of
problems such as time-outs and account setting changes. Your
up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently.
For
more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in
background and leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

I think you answered your own question in this last post. Get a new ISP!

This is the Logon site for you, but any ISP worth 2¢ could have deleted the
messages for you. Those messages should not be on the server and AT&T Yahoo
is giving you the run-around.

Since they are all being downloaded over and over, the only thing you can do
right now is to keep dragging new messages to another folder and deleting
the others. With News rules, you can choose only to download messages going
back a number of days, but that is not an option with Mail rules.

One other thing you can try is to delete the Inbox.dbx file with OE closed.
A new empty Inbox will be created when you open OE. It is located in the
Message Store where the Pop3uidl file was.

I doubt this will help, but it won't hurt to try.

Frank,
I did as you suggested but it does the same thing. Starts the download
of 15,764 emails then stops at some point, then starts again at 1 of
15,764 meaning doubles then triples etc. Any other ideas? How can I
get to the server and have them delete the messages?

Bruce,
After a couple of attempts my messages that are on the server keep
stopping and starting over. There are over 16,000 messages dating
back to Oct 2005. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks

Create a new Identity in OE and download the account there.
Or else go to the account's Web mail site and delete them there.
