Default virus issue

I recently bought a new HD for my laptop. Upon using the OEM Windows XP cd
to format the drive and connecting to the internet it seems I've picked up
some kind of virus that has taken over my laptop. I am unable to access the
windows update site, or any type of antivirus site. I even tried burning the
AVG free antivirus software onto a disk for my laptop, but i'm not able to
run it. I then decided to simply reformat but am not able to do that either
as I can't get into the setup mode from the CD like I normally would be able
to do if the Windows XP CD is in the drive. I can't even get into the
regedit utility. Other than this, internet browsing seems normal. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Jason

I'll give you some sites to check for Malware, Spyware, etc. but this is not
a question that is exclusive to Outlook Express.

Internet Explorer, or even WinXP would be a better place to ask this.

IE6 Specific Newsgroup:

When all else fails, HijackThis
v1.99.1(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to
use. It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware.

I think it's pretty obvious this isn't a "Malware, Spyware" issue. Think
before you eagerly start typing away the next time you're trying to be
"helpful".

Think before *you* post. Your post never mentions Outlook Express and your
problem far exceeds OE. Why are you even asking in this newsgroup?

Please include previous replies in your posts. Thank you.

You don't know your head from your gay ass you fetal-alcohol effects loser.
How incredibly stupid do you have to be to think this has something to do
with spyware? Did I say anything about popups? Does spyware prevent the
regedit utility from loading? You probably have to keep on your toes just to
hold your burger flipping job at McDonalds. Stop littering this group with
your nonsense and drivel moron. You're too dumb to help anyone with a tech
issue.

If you reboot, you should be able to access the BIOS and reset it under Boot
Options to Boot from a CD. If you then have your XP installation CD in the
drive, you get an option to "Hit any key to boot from CD" and should be one
your way to a reformat. Failing that, you can download a boot disk from
this site if you have a floppy drive and reformat from that:
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

But your question really does not belong in this newsgroup, but rather in
one for problems with your operating system. Good luck.

Once again. What is your Outlook Express question???

Like all MVPs, I am a volunteer and do not get paid by MS or anyone else. If
you do not like my advice to ask in an XP or IE newsgroup, then SCREW YOU!

I have better things to do with my free time than deal with idiots like you.

Goodbye.

Even ignoring your public relations skills, I think you're beyond help.
You're posting to an Outlook Express group with an issue that's completely
unrelated to Outlook Express. You yourself suggested a possible virus,
and then claimed that this had nothing to do with malware, a category that
includes viruses.

For your information (not that I think enlightenment will result), yes,
some spyware does prevent regedit from running, and most spyware these
days doesn't involve popups.

If Bruce can't help you with a question that's relevant to this group,
then probably no one here can. If you post to a relevant group and
behave like a civilized adult, you might get a useful answer. ON the
other hand, it may be too late for that. It doesn't take very long for
the "communities" to find out who the jerks are.

Sure sounds like a hijackware problem to me, Beans. Most hijackware works
similar to viruses and Trojans.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Well, that's pretty dumb. Your subject says that you think it's a virus, a
kind of malware.
