Default Message rule doesn't work

Hello,

I get approximately 6.23 x 10^23 spams every day with the word "PHARMACY" in
the body text, so being a smart guy, I created a message rule to kick those
messages into the Delete folder. Problem is, it hasn't been working. To make
matters more mysterious, when I send MYSELF a test message with the word
"pharmacy" in the body text, it winds up in the delete folder as it should.

Anybody know what gives?

Thanks,
Roy

If the word is in an HTML section of the message, the rule won't see it.
That is the spams that look like a small poster rather than just ordinary
text.

Thanks Bruce - Looks like I need to do a little "homework." I will say,
though, that the offending messages look exactly like ordinary text to me.
Is there another way to tell if the word is in an HTML section?

Ctrl+F3 will show you the message source. You'll have to search a bit. This
is from a message I had that was Mult-part containing HTML and regular text.

Content-Type: text/html;
charset="us-ascii"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

HTML xmlns:eXclaimer=3D"http://www.exclaimer.co.uk" =
xmlns:msxsl=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:xslt" =
xmlns:exc=3D"http://www.exclaimer.co.uk/rtf"
HEAD
META http-equiv=3D"Content-Type" content=3D"text/html; =
charset=3DUTF-16"

You should see a similar view.

Default Message rule doesn't work

Bruce,

Here's a cut & paste of an actual spam message containing the word
"PHARMACY". Note the nonsense letters on the right.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi

QUIT O l VERPA o YIN j G FOR YO o UR PH e ARM z AC h Y

S x AV n E up z to 5 i 0 % wi p th http://www.stoaswiu.com

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now here's what came up on the message source. It appears the letters on the
right were actually interspersed with the original message to mung it up,
and then disassociated from the message to yield a "clean" copy by using
some clever style sheet antics. If you've seen this tactic before, I
apologize for repeating it.

Bruce,

It seems my cut & paste of the message somehow got "re-munged" on its way to
the message board! So here's a re-typing of the original message so you can
see what it looked like when I received it:

Hi Roy
These .gif type spams are like a picture and so message rules cannot read
any text in them. Most come with a coloured background and coloured
lettering.
See if your ISP can stop these for you in your Mail Box.
ISPs are slowly starting to offer spam blocking, but not all can block these
..gif type.
If they do you may need to go into the Mail Box every 7 days or so and check
that there are no genuine emails caught in there. Most ISPs that provide
this service, auto-delete on a 7 day cycle.
There is a very long winded message rule that I have read does stop them -
what you do is set the message rule to block anything that does NOT contain
a letter of the alphabet i.e. 26 rules. ;-(

Except that his example is a message with HTML content, not a .gif

Default Message rule doesn't work

Hi Antioch,

Scroll back through my dialog with Bruce Hagen, and you will see that in
this case it is an HTML spam, not a .gif spam. What is interesting is that
the spammer apparently used a technique in which the text portion of the
multi-part message is munged (thus camouflaging the text and avoiding
detection by my message rule), and then "un-munged" using some fancy style
applications in the HTML portion. So, for example, what looks like the word
"PHARMACY" to the reader of the spam message, looks something like
"PnHfARdMvACwY" to the message rule detector program. Dirty tricks! And they
think I'm gonna actually BUY something from them??

Sorry - yes -jumped to a conclusion - but I have not, as yet, had the type I
think you are describing - all my pharmacy have been in 'gif style -
coloured text on coloured background.
The same with the 'stock' ones.
What will those 'barstewards' think of next in their spams.
