1) A short while ago I suddenly couldn't log onto my email server anymore. I
try, and get a Logon dialog. I exit from that and an Error msg appears, with "Server Error 0x800CCC90" and "Error Number 0x800CCC92" (in case that helps you identity the problem. I've checked the settings out with my ISP (Sympatico) and they say there's nothing wrong with the settings or anything on their side, and that there must be something wrong with my email reader (which is Outlook Express 6). I've scanned for viruses and found nothing. The ISP also suggested uninstalling and reinstalling OE. Which leads me to my second question... 2) I would like to export all msgs to some recoverable file so I can uninstall OE. I go File/Export/Messages, and get the instruction that this action will export msgs to MS Outlook or MS Exchange. Don't think I have either. But I press OK anyway and get an error message "An error occurred while initializing MAPI." So, do you know what might be wrong with my OE? And, if I need to uninstall/reinstall, how can I first put my messages somewhere safe? Grateful for any and all tips, Heather |

Are you scanning your emails for viruses?
Turn off the email scanning. Tools, Accounts,Mail tab, highlight an account, Properties, Server tab Are the pop and smtp server names correct? File, Export works with Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Exchange installed on the same computer. Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V will put the location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer. In WindowsXP, 2K & 3K, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options | View. Backup the files to a new folder. Open OE, File, Import, File| Import| Messages| OE6| Message store directory, then browse to the new folder. -- Ron Sommer "Heather01" wrote in message ... : 1) A short while ago I suddenly couldn't log onto my email server anymore. Thank-you, Ron.
I actually didn't know how to back up my e-mail and your description was really helpful. Talked to my ISP again - different support person of course - and they did some other things to the settings, including removing and re-adding my account, which worked. Earlier, I turned off the antivirus email scanning, as you suggested, but that had no effect. My ISP person, however, thought it would have an effect on outgoing mail. So I now have the email scanning of outgoing mail disabled. And all is working fine. Thanks again. "Ron Sommer" wrote: Are you scanning your emails for viruses? Turn off the email scanning. First, reinstalling OE is not likely to help. See Ron's message on how to
backup, which you should do anyway, as your hard drive can fail. You can enable a log file via Tools | Options | Maintenance to help diagnose the problem. I'd suggest you first see if you can telnet to their server (see http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_san...op3telnet.htm). If you cannot, then the problem is definitely not OE. If you can telnet, then in OE try removing the account, then closing OE (and possibly rebooting) and then reopening OE and adding the account back again. steve "Heather01" wrote in message ... 1) A short while ago I suddenly couldn't log onto my email server anymore. You guys are great. Thanks for your fast answer.
Well, I have enabled a log file as you suggested, but cannot see the said log file any where. But doesn't really matter because things are working now. I tried to telnet to the ISP's server, as you suggested, and couldn't. So, I called their support again, did some things to the settings (sorry, can't remember what), removed and reentered my account, and Presto - works. Thanks you for your help! You can see where that is in OE at Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder. With Win2K and WinXP you will have to set Windows Explorer to show hidden files and folders. The Log file can be opened by Notepad or WordPad. -- Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE/WM http://www.fjsmjs.com Answer in newsgroup. Don't send mail. |

Glad its working.
Make sure you disable the log file now, as it will otherwise continue to grow and eventually cause problems. steve "Heather01" wrote in message ... You guys are great. Thanks for your fast answer.
