Did you close OE before you tried to shutdown Windows? It's best to
manually close any programs that have files open for updating. Windows will tell the programs to close during shutdown but might not allow sufficient time for them to close their data files. Additionally, OE may be trying to compact folders during OE shutdown. If you force a Windows shutdown during compacting, you can corrupt your mail folders. Starting with XP SP2, OE does a compact every 100 closings. It needs to complete that without interruption. In addition to that, some anti-virus programs set to scan e-mail can prevent OE from closing. As an example, see: MSIMN Is Still Running After You Quit Outlook Express http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=226313 -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "deango" wrote in message ... General OE Caveats:
- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose. - Empty Deleted Items folder daily. - Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm !! = WinXP SP2 only: Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place. - WinXP SP2 only: If your machine is fully up-to-date at Windows Update, installing the following patch (KB918766) will help to avoid such data loss in the futu http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...2-98af2256ccc3 This patch will be included in the next Cumulative Update for Outlook Express/WinXP SP2. - Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Security, Shell/User) deango wrote: Hi. the process msimn.exe is delaying shutdown when I turn off WinXP. Yes Michael, I closed OEX before shutting down. I make it a habit to
close all open applications as it expedites 'Turn off computer'. My anti-virus program does not scan for incoming or outgoing Email. I compact OEX weekly with the recommended procedure; click Outlook Express in the Folder tree/close Outlook Express/File/Folder/Compact Folders. When OEX comes up on the 100th closing, there is very little to do. Thanks, This msimn.exe process delay is recent, possibly since an ms update? One additional thing, with the latest OE updates, when OE compacts
folders, it first copies all your DBX files to the Recycle Bin. That can take a while depending on the number and sizes. You might also use the Task Manager (Ctrl/Alt/Delete) after closing OE to see if the MSIMN.EXE is going away or how long it takes. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "deango" wrote in message ... The download link is http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en It places the backup in Recycled, overwriting any earlier backup of the sane folder(s). To use it, copy it to the store folder, delete the one you want to replace and then rename the BAK file to DBX.
