entered the server name correctly. Account: 'nancc', Server: 'mail.ev1.net',
Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error
Number: 0x800CCC0D

then it seems that my messages are downloaded

The message is telling you that mail.ev1.net is not the correct address
of your provider's POP3 server. You need to ask your provider for their
POP3 address, or simply ask them how to setup your email program to use
their service.

Given her posting email address, and the fact that 'mail.ev1.net'
displays a banner when I Telnet to port 110, I'd guess that you are
wrong.

I was just able to Telnet into mail.ev1.net, so the server name is
valid.

If you get that once in a while, it could be a temporary server problem.

You'll also get that error if you don't have an active Internet
connection when you try to download mail.

The curious part is that you say that your mail does download. Look in
OE at Tools, Accounts, Mail. Do you have more than one mail account?
If so, it could be that one is failing and one is working. If you have
a dial-up connection and are not connected to your ISP when you open OE
and one of the accounts is set to dial (Tools, Accounts, Mail,
Properties, Connection) and the other isn't, and OE tries the one not
set to dial first, then you will get that problem.

"Host can't be found" errors can be DNS issues, or even email AV scan
issues. If the AV scanner is taking to long to process a scan, the
client may think that the host couldn't be found, even though the
scanning proxy actually found the host, and downloaded the email. I'd
guess that last from your description of the email actually downloading.

Turn of your AV email scanning. Leave the memory resident on-access
scanner running; that is all the AV protection you need. Email AV
scanning, especially with MS Outlook Express, runs the risk of
corrupting your message store.

This is usually caused by an anti-spam program or an anti-virus set to scan
email.

Turn off email scanning in your anti-virus. It provides no added
protection. After doing so it may be necessary to reset the server names in
OE.

Email scanning slows down Sending and Receiving, sometimes enough that OE
times out. Since some of the received messages have large (often virus)
attachments, which exasperates the problem.
Some Comcast users have found it necessary to totally uninstall Norton and
switch to the free AVG with mail scanning off. Norton invented email
scanning and here's what they say:

"Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses
that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions."
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...256c7500723cf0

"...your computer is protected if Auto-Protect is enabled. Auto-Protect
scans any incoming files, including email attachments, when the files are
saved to your hard drive."
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...01100907323806

"NAV provides multiple layers of protection. Email scanning is just one of
those layers. Even if you are not running Email Scanning, your computer is
protected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments by NAV
Auto-Protect. Auto-Protect will scan any incoming files, including email
attachments, as they are saved to your hard drive. To make sure that
Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled
and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus
definitions."

So Symantec used to say this often and clearly. The newer stuff doesn't
have the statement included as it was considered an embarrassment. If you
know anyone who programs for Norton try to get them to talk about it.
