Been running fine with Norton 2003 (Internet security and system works).
Now I've finally updated to NSW 2006 and NIS 2006. Not sure which it was, but I think it was the NIS install that seems to have really hammered my OE. OE is now VERY slow to load the folders (yeah, they're kinda large, but they were large before), deleting individual messages takes several seconds, as does moving from one folder to the next. I've done the things Norton suggests, such as a program search in NIS for internet-connected programs, running Norton's Speed disk. The stuff that's in startup needs to be there, and was there before. Any ideas, other than removing perhaps the Norton Anti-Spam (as that's where I think the problem is, but then what to use for anti-spam? MS Defender does not allow for any anti-spam configurations). Thanks. -- Bill |

Short answer, get rid of Norton and don't replace it with McAfee. Both
programs are not suitable with Outlook Express. I use, and recommend, AVG Free: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5 or: http://www.grisoft.com/doc/40/lng/ww When prompted, choose Custom Installation and *uncheck* e-mail scanning when you see the option. Norton, and McAfee, products are not Outlook Express friendly, and I don't know of any OE-MVP that would recommend using them. To remove Norton completely: Commonly used Symantec tools: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05103109480139 Using the Norton Removal Tool: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039 Removing NAV 2003 and earlier using Rnav2003.exe. http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...01092114452606 Symantec NIS, NAV and NSW 2004, 2005, 2006 removal http://basconotw.mvps.org/SymRem.htm Symantec NIS, Norton Antispam, and NPF 2004, 2005, 2006 removal http://basconotw.mvps.org/SymRem1.htm And if necessary: http://www.ccleaner.com/ General precautions for Outlook Express: Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}. And backup often. The last, best Norton product was released in the late '90s, or whenever it was that Symantec bought Norton products. The last Norton product I installed on my computer was Norton SystemWorks 2003. I booted the "Norton System Doctor" after finding it screwing over the system. I booted the "Norton Anti Virus" when Norton started nagging me to upgrade to "Norton Anti Virus 2004". I won't let anybody I know install Norton anything. I recommend Grisoft AVG Free for now. I am eventually going to load Avast anti virus for evaluation. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html The license agreement for both is limited to household use. Non-profit and profit organizations need to check with the respective sites to get products with a proper license agreement. I concur with Bruce Hagen: Get rid of Norton. Don't even think about McAfee (tried them 6 years ago; bad as Norton). -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

Well, I do agree about McAfee!
As for Norton, I've had pretty good luck at least until they started with "activation." I was running NIS 2003 and figured it was time to upgrade. Think I was wrong. :-( And my antispam finally bit the dust (GIANT company that MS bought out and promised to keep updateable), but that time has apparently lapsed, so I took it off. That left me without a configurable antispam program. And of course my win2k is pretty old in that the Pentium processor is "only" 600mHz. I probably wouldn't notice the hit on a much faster machine. --Bill |

Try Thunderbird that has a built-in anti-spam program: http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird Alias And of course my win2k is pretty old in that the Pentium processor is "only" 600mHz.
