When I try to send an attachment, either a file attachment or through my
Epson Scan to email, the message looks as if it is trying to go but seems to
get stuck. It then takes over the rest of the system, slows everything down
to a crawl, uses up all the virtual memory and refuses any commands. I have
to resort to an emergency shutdown. On restarting the system checks the
files on the C Drive for consistency. While the problem is there the
msimn.exe on the taskbar rises very rapidly and the cpu memory rises and
falls rapidly.
Can anyone help?

Make sure email scanning of your antivirus software is turned off. See
www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

Also, what is the size of the attachments? It could be due to the large
size if they are several megabytes.

Do you know if the problem occurs as the message is written to the
Outbox folder or as it being sent to your ISP's SMTP mail server? If
uncertain, uncheck Tools, Options, Send, Send Immediately. Then the
file stops in the Outbox and you have to manually do a send and receive.
That can help pin point the problem.

Do you have an anti-virus program set to scan outgoing mail? That can
cause the problem.

How big are the attachments? Check with your ISP for their maximum
message size for sending. Due to encoding overhead a message is about
40% larger than the attachment. So a 500 KB attachment results in a
message of about 700 KB.

Files from a scanner can be unexpectedly huge depending on the
resolution and file format.

Also, if you haven't recently, do a File, Folder, Compact on the Outbox
and Sent Items (or all folders).
