What is the file name of the OE address book? And where is it located?
I have OE 6.00.2600 on my old computer and OE 6.00.2900 on my new computer. Could I just copy the address book file from the old computer and insert it into the right directory on the new computer? (Using the Export/Import feature didn't copy all my groups; I'm hoping that I can copy the file itself.) Bobbi |

Open the Address Book in the identity on the old machine and File | Export
to any place on your HDD that is easy for you. My Documents is fine. Copy it to CD and then copy that CD to the HDD on the new machine. Again, My Documents is fine. Right click on the folder and remove the Read Only attribute. Then, open the Address Book in the new machine and File | Import and point to where you saved the Address Book. As far as Groups go, they do not import, or export, without a little help. {Jump in here, Jim!). Courtesy of Jim Pickering, MVP-Outlook Express Create a "standalone" WAB file: http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/wab.htm#wabexe Then open your default address book to the group desired and select all member of the group and copy them to the clipboard (Ctrl+A selects all, Ctrl+C copies them to the clipboard). Then open your "standalone" WAB file and paste the contacts into that file (you will have to hit the Enter key to OK each entry but it beats typing) and then either copy that wab file to a floppy disc or export it as CSV file. Otherwise, folders and groups neither import, nor export. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Bobbi" wrote in message ... What is the file name of the OE address book? Thanks, Bruce & Jim-
I don't have a current WAB. (The only .WAB file I could find is the one I set up when I first got that old computer, in 1999) OE is storing my contacts in some other kind of file. However, I've given up. I'll just recreate the groups from whatever contacts are listed as individuals in the address book, and I'll just have to retype some of them. Sigh. Hi, Mikey-
What would be the extension of the address book? There is only one .WAB file on my computer and it's the default 1999 version, which contains only a few contacts. I've set Windows Explorer to show hidden files. Could the address book have a different extension that WAB? Bobbi "mikey" wrote in message ... if you also have Outlook installed then OE and O share address book and it is under Outlook. you might look at the rest of the dates on the WAB file to see when it was updated last. what you may be seeing is it created date, there also should be last used and last updated dates. Frank-
Thanks for telling me how to find this information. It is indeed shared with Outlook. What would happen if I clicked the other radio button that says not to share information? Would OE then generate a WAB file without screwing up all the data? Bobbi "Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE/WM" wrote in message ... "Bobbi" wrote in message ... OE would not copy the data. You can, however, export it from Outlook as a
CSV file and import into the Address Book from that. -- Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE/WM http://www.fjsmjs.com Answer in newsgroup. Don't send mail. "Bobbi" wrote in message ... Frank-
I've never used Outlook, and it doesn't work. (When I click on it, I get a message about a corrupt files, but I'm not going to try to fix that.) However, there is an option somewhere that says Outlook and OE are supposed to share the address book. If I tried to switch that option to not sharing the address book, would the system then generate a regular WAB address book? Bobbi "Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE/WM" wrote in message ...
