Default Outlook express help please

originally posted to the WinXp support group, but I realise this may be a
more suitable group, now I have found it..
I have win XP with Outlook Express installed. v6.0.0.2900 2180

and the problem is that I had a power cut whilst using the PC a couple of
weeks ago, and whilst everything seems to have recovered fine, OE is corrupt
somewhere, because when I send an email , it sends OK, but stays in the
OUTBOX... when the send and receive button is pressed , a second copy is
sent, ad infinitum.
Watching the progress bar it moves completely to the right- and stops there.
I have used the control panel to access the WinXP setup and removed OE6 and
re-installed it - still a problem. I've run scandisk, etc without a
problem..
What on earth is corrupt and where please?
Thanks a lot for any reply.

The Outbox is probably corrupt.
Go to Tools | Options | Maintenance and see where OE is storing its files.
Close OE.
Go there with Windows Explorer and delete Outbox.dbx. With Win2K and WinXP
it will be a hidden file.
OE will create a new one when you reopen it.

If you think the Outbox may have messages you want to recover, instead of
deleting it, move, not copy, it to an empty Windows folder and then use
DBXtract to recover the messages.

Nice call, and well spotted Frank, I've just done that ( it was 8.5MB even
though empty) so I guessed that would cure it.
I deleted outbox.dbx, emptied the recycle bin, did a 'search ' for
outbox.dbx, which didnt exist now. Then opened OE6 , and closed it again,
searched for outbox.dbx again - now 75.8K, so looking good. Opened OE6 send
myself an email to test it via a throw away address, and its still a
problem... Message stopped in outbox, and continued to send a copy at each
press of send/receive.. Do you think its one of the other Mailboxes,
including the custom ones I have set up at all....
Thanks for the help..

Got the little Sod , only got to fix it now. Doing a back up of the sent
items, the AV software ( Trend Pc-cillin) flagged up worm Stration.az.......
so I deleted the sent items, and outbox together- still a problem... AV
scanned the .dbx files, and nothing flagged.. Ah well back to the Pc-cillin
site and check how to get rid of the little sod...
Thanks

Default Outlook express help please

After deleting dbx files, continue with the following:

General precautions for Outlook Express:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your
mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

And backup often.
