When I delete a message, Outlook Express takes me to the next message
on the list. Is there a way to control what happens (move up instead of
down, etc.)

Add the Preview Pane button to the toolbar to toggle it on and off. View |
Layout | Customize Toolbar.

With the PP off, if you double click on a message it opens in its own
window. If you start with an older message, and then delete it, the next
newest message will open. If you start with the newest message first and
delete, another message will not open.

If you open a message in its own window, you must close that window and
then delete the message from the message list.

If you delete the message from the message reading window, OE will open
the next message in that window.
