Thanks, I assume that Dan got the original message the same as you got it,
that would indicate that his email address was there - if he did not then
Michael's suggestion will hopefully shed some light.

There is a setting to "Automatically put people I reply to in my address
book" and maybe you could try changing that just in case your address book
is corrupt and causing the trouble. I have seen corruption where there is a
malformed entry but it is not visible, so you cannot delete it you have to
export, delete or preferably rename the old book and then import into a new
one.

sent to multiple people (including dan in the "to" field), that i hit
reply to all on, leaves out dan. i've tried deleting him from contacts,
changing his email address to another one he has, and i've tried
changing his name in my contacts hoping that something was causing the
error. i've also tried deleting him from my contacts entirely, and
still it leaves him out of "reply to all" messages
