Hello,
I am using Outlook Express on my new Dell computer, running Windows XP. Before, I always got a small envelope icon on the bottom toolbar, near the clock, whenever a new e-mail was received and unread. Now I cannot get that icon. I get no notification of new mail. The Earthlink and Dell people tell me that it should be there. All of my preferences on Outlook Express are correct I think. Can someone please help me? Thanks a lot!! Marc |

And did New Mail Icon go away after you installed IE7?

I am running IE6. This is a new computer from Dell. My old Gateway was
running XP Home Edition, but I still had the same versions of Outlook Express and IE. On the OE help menu, it says to select the "preferences" tab from tools--options, and then to select something like "display icon on toolbar when receiving new mail." Well, I don't have a "preferences tab"! No preferences reference anything about new mail aside from the sound. "PA Bear" wrote: And did New Mail Icon go away after you installed IE7? To get automatic new mail notification, Outlook Express must be running.
It can be minimized. You also need to set Tools, Options, General, Check for new messages every xx minutes (this should be set to at least 10-15 minutes to avoid an excessive burden on the mail server). Unlike Netscape, Microsoft will download the messages before notifying you. When the new mail is downloaded, you get an envelope icon in the system tray, and if desired a wave sound file played (Tools, Options, General, Play Sound; and Control Panel, Sounds, New Mail Notification). If the sound doesn't seem to play, you may need to select a different sound, then change it back to the desired one. The notification icon for new messages in the status bar and "Play sound when new messages arrive" features of Outlook Express may not work successfully with Trend Micro Anti-Spam installed. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "144memnon" wrote in message ... Thanks! I have all of the preferences adjusted as you said already. I also
always have Outlook Express open. Your last note was VERY interesting though. Dell's Anti-Virus/Spam software is Trend Micro!! Would you say that I have to uninstall it totally and go with something like Norton? I had Norton before and had some virus issues. Trend Micro seems better, but not if it disallows the envelope icon. What are your thoughts? Thanks so much!!! Very few anti-spam apps play nice with OE. This includes TM AntiSpam.

I just got a new Dell XPS M170 and have now spent about 5 hours trying to
figure out why I cannot get a new message letter icon notification when I receive an email. Not only that, but I can no longer get a sound notifcation (that worked until a couple of hours ago) btw I've tried this with the installed IE6 and the newly downloaded IE7 - no difference. It sounds like you were all close to figuring it out - any more info? thanks hlef "144memnon" wrote: Hello, I am using Outlook Express on my new Dell computer, running Windows XP.
