Default Get Next 300 Headers

When I click on 'Next 300 Headers' nothing seems to happen. Maybe I'm just
looking in the wrong place.

Also, when I close OE, then reopen, do I go back to the original 300 (I
guess) headers?

Look at the status bar, on the bottom of the Outlook Express window.
Does it say that there are unread messages ready to be downloaded?

create news rule
[tools][message rules][news][create]
where the message was sent more than (your choice of time) ago

delete it
and mark as read (so the message will not download again)

ok out

uncheck getxxx headers at a time

synchronise newsgroups

every (your choice of time) [tools] [message rules] [news] [apply now]

problem no longer pertains, you have a lean, mean, current, newsreader

If there aren't anymore new messages on the news server, nothing new
will be downloaded.

Does the status bar indicate that there are messages that have not been
downloaded?

Once you download headers they stay in OE until either the news server
deletes them or you have them deleted via your Tools, Options,
Maintenance settings or message rules.

Thanks all -
Yes, I have thousands of unread messages, but I finally understand how to
clean up what shows on my screen initially.

Again, thank you all for that. I'm off an running (reading) :-)
