Most of the time, when I start Outlook Express, I get the following message:
An unknown error has occurred Configuration: Account: Hotmail Server: http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp User name: Protocol: HTTPMail Port: 0 Secure(SSL): 0 Code: 80004005 I dismiss the error message, and OE seems to continue running normally. Any ideas what this might be about? I'm running OE6, and IE7. I have a paid hotmail account. |

Authentication fails when you use Outlook or Outlook Express to try to log
on to a HTTP-based mail server if you use Internet Explorer version 7.0: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/904942 Otherwise, the problem's on MSN/Hotmail's end. Until they automagically clear up (hours/days/weeks...), access the account at www.hotmail.com. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) Jesse wrote: Most of the time, when I start Outlook Express, I get the following message: An unknown error has occurred Configuration: Account: Hotmail Server: http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp User name: Protocol: HTTPMail Port: 0 Secure(SSL): 0 Code: 80004005 I dismiss the error message, and OE seems to continue running normally. Thanks PA Bear. The problem doesn't seem to be authentication, because after
the error message on startup, OE seems to continue running normally. I can send and receive email from both POP and Hotmail accounts. I'm trying to figure out whether this problem is related to another one I'm having with msimn.exe crashing (also posted in this newsgroup: http://tinyurl.com/y6g6jw). "PA Bear" wrote in message ... i have the same problem. outlook express fails when it tries to grab new mail
from hotmail, but no error is given. the odd part is, as soon as i hit send/receive again, it works. it will always work AFTER it fails the first time. that suggests that it isn't a server issue. error: http://uploads.neowin.net/download.p...name=error.JPG "Jesse" wrote: Most of the time, when I start Outlook Express, I get the following message: An unknown error has occurred Configuration: Account: Hotmail Server: http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp User name: Protocol: HTTPMail Port: 0 Secure(SSL): 0 Code: 80004005 I dismiss the error message, and OE seems to continue running normally. To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all of previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. Thank you. There have been at least three (3) other similar posts in OE newsgroups today, all posting the 80004005 error. This tells me that, once again, the problem's on MSN/Hotmails end. I'll take a (or another) look at your other thread. -- ~PA Bear Jesse wrote: Thanks PA Bear. I'm having the EXACT same problem. Will try Robear's suggestion, but
my hotel connection won't allow Windows validation right now, so I can't download the fix ![]() I'll try to follow up later...
