Default Reinstall OE 6 SP1

When I downloaded and tried to install KB837009 from the Microsoft website, I
received a message that in order to install this update, Outlook Express
Service Pack 1 must be installed. My version of Outlook Express is
6.00.2800.1123. However, when I look for the list of files that have been
installed, seven (7) required files for SP1 are missing (Msimm.exe,
Oemig50.exe, Oemiglib.dll, wab.exe wabfind.dll, wabimp.dll and wagmig.exe).
To correct this problem, should I uninstall Outlook Express 6 from the
Control Panel Add/Remove Programs and then install Outlook Express SP1 from
Internet Explorer 6 SP1 (which is installed ) by adding the component Outlook
Express 6? I tried to repair and reinstall Internet Explorer 6 SP1, however,
neither of these two options helped. If I uninstall Outlook Express 6, I
assume that I will loose all my settings and data. If so, how do I back it
up and reinstall the data after I install Outlook Express 6 SP1? Thanks.
Paul.

Reinstalling a program usually leaves your data intact. But, it's a
good idea to back up things just in case.

Default Reinstall OE 6 SP1

Hi Robert. I never reinstalled WinME. Windows Update did offer me KB837009.
I downloaded and installed it (sucessfully), however, Windows Update keeps
telling me that I need this update. This is probably because I have an
incomplete copy of OE 6 SP1. When I try to install KB837009 from the
Microsoft website, I get an error message, that in order to install this
update, Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 must be installed. Sounds like that
I need to back up my OE 6 data, uninstall OE 6 and then reinstall OE 6 SP1
from Internet Explorer 6 SP1, which I have. Do you agree? If so, how do I
back up my OE 6 data, so I can restore it after the reinstall of OE 6 SP1.
Another item of note is that Windows Update used to work properly, until a
Symmantic technician had me delete several registry entries, in order to
manually delete Norton Antivirus 2005. This was done because, after
installing this program, this computer froze on a screen, which said that
Norton Antivirus could not find the virus signatures. Since we could not get
to Control Panel to uninstall the program, we removed it manually from the
registry. I think that he told me to remove some incorrect registry entries.
Another solution to my problem, possibly would be to use System Restore and
restore the system back to a date when everything was working OK. What do
you think about this option? As per your last question, my OE 6 MSOE.DLL
version is 6.00.2800.1478, which is later than the 6.00.2800.1427 version
that you referenced. Thanks for helping. Paul.

Ah! Now we know the rest of the story. Follow these intructions to the
LETTER!...

Clear History, delete Cookies and delete Temporary Internet Files (including
offline files) via IE: Tools Options General; then...

1. Download the Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service
Pack 1 (KB837009; all OSS) from the following link, saving it to your
Desktop:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

[ Optional: 2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode. (During the reboot, keep
pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears Choose Safe
Mode Enter.)

3. Rename the downloaded file to KB837009.EXE and copy it to C:\ (the root
directory of drive C; assumes drive C is the boot drive)

4. Start Run (type in) C:\KB837009.EXE /N:V (Note the space) press
ENTER

5. Close the command window.

6. Reboot [into Windows] and check in at Windows Update to see if the
problem persists.

Jack,

MSOE.DLL v6.00.2800.1478 is correct for Win Me and indicates that you have
installed KB330994 "April 2003, Security Update for Outlook Express 6 SP"
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330994) [MS03-014: April, 2003,
Cumulative Patch for Outlook Express].

I note though that KB330994 refers to msoe.dll being v6.0.2800.1158 dated
11 Oct 2002 whereas the patch contains v6.0.2800.1478 dated 3 March 2003,
the same date as the other files in the hotfix. Why this is, I have no
idea and based on my logs from when I installed that patch on systems with
IE6/OE6 SP1, both XP and Win Me the KB is incorrect.
