Good Evening ...
In my Store Folder I have a number of .dbx and .dbt newsgroups, that I have subscribed to at one time ... but not all currently; some of those are well into the million bytes. I also have a .dbx file for every presently subscribed-to newsgroup, as well as for every item under my Local Folders. My 'Deleted Items' .dbx file is 437mb. If these sizes are too big, how do I maintain/monitor the sizes to stay in good grace with Outlook Express? I do 'reset' followed by 'compact' at least every other day. Please advise me how to maintain this 'stuff' in good fashion. Thank you for your time and consideration. Jim Hughes |

Delete any dbx files currently not in use and then compact all your folders.
Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. You already figured out ho to tell the size of the dbx files. For non-newsgroups, we usually recommend keeping them under 100MB. But that is a precaution so you don't lose e-mail messages. OE only mirrors what is on the server, so there is no worries about losing newsgroup messages as long as they are on the server, since you can Reset and download them again. Newsgroups do remove messages after a period of time, so if you have anything in particular you want to save, drag it to a user created folder for archiving. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Jim Hughes" wrote in message news ![]() Good Evening ... By Workflow, do you mean anything automatic? Only the Compact prompt you
will see after 100 closings. I would like to suggest you get this freebie tool to backup OE with a simple click of the mouse. OEQB: www.oehelp.com/OEBackup/ And add this patch to your currently updated XP/SP2. Patch KB918766: http://tinyurl.com/mx3r2 This patch addresses some of the issues that were caused by KB911567. Address Book problems. Unsent templates appearing as sent. Manually compacting will now reset the registry counter to Zero in WinXP/SP2 and also sends a copy of your dbx files to the recycle bin as a temporary backup. To complete the fix for .eml templates, a registry change is needed. See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918766 Tom Koch also has this information at his site, along with a downloadable Zip file to do the registry change for you. Bruce Hagen ...
Thanks again; my cup runneth over with good stuff ! Yes, I did mean automatic. I came from Burroughs ... and we had a 'Workflow Language' ... allowed us to establish, program, and execute a chain of command to do a myriad of tasks. Thanks for the added info and directions ... they all certainly help. I will again heed your direction; all appreciated. Take care and keep supporting in the manner that you do. ... anyone can market/sell a product; the successful ones support their products!
