Has MS issued any updates to OE?

with a 'spam' folder.

Was it also configured with McAfee or Norton?

A spam folder is not part of OE.

That is not normally part of OE. Dell must have installed some anti-spam
program.

Dell in particular does a LOT of modifications to its new computers, so that
would have been setup by Dell. It's most likely for an antivirus program
bundled with the computer to attempt to separate out spam and put in in the
spam folder for you, rather than have it dirtying up the Inbox.
Somewhere in the docs there will be an explanation but that's as far as I
can take in that direction. It's probably Norton or McAfee that was
installed for you; the first year will usually be free and after that you
start paying for the subscriptions. WELL worth it, but ... there are also
freebies available once you get you feet under you.

In a way, I like Dell doing that, but I do NOT like it that the user (you,
your son) aren't told anything about it or what it's for! That's just plain
stupid, IMO. I guess RTFM applies here.

Yes, I believe it does; but if the program can add a 'folder' why not the
owner?

You can. Right click on Local Folders and choose New Folder.

As others indicate, Dell probably supplied an anti-spam program that
created the spam folder. Antispam programs and antivirus software set to
scan email mess up OE's message store and result in message loss. see
www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

I would recommend uninstalling any such software, particularly if its
Norton, as Norton can result in a 30 % reduction in the machine's
performance and also screws up OE bigtime.
