Default false alarms -

Every time OE checks for new messages I get the 'new e-mail' icon and the
beep in my toolbar, whether there's a new message or not.

This new glitch coincided with my downloading of Symantec's 'Norton 2007'
anti-virus package but they've helped me trouble-shoot and are convinced
there's no connection.

Help!

OE will give the new mail notification any time it downloads a message,
even if the message is automatically deleted due to a blocked senders
list entry or message rule (Tools, Options, Message Rules).

You might check your deleted items folder to see if anything new is
there.

I believe Norton automatically installs some message rules in OE.

Thank you Michael, for responding so quickly - I was so hopeful, and DID find
something in Message Rules about Norton Anti-Spam but have removed the Rule,
have made sure everything in my Deleted folder is marked 'Read', and even
rebooted just to be sure but - I still get the beep and the icon when OE
checks for new messages without even finding one...

More ideas???

1. Turn off email scanning in Norton Anti-virus.
2. Turn off Norton Anti-Spam.

Thank you Frank. I had tried - and just tried again - turning off the Norton
email scanning.

I've removed the 'Message Rule' that I found Norton had inserted - I don't
know where else to find any anti-spam tool - perhaps I haven't got that
feature?

I'm still getting false alarms every time OE checks for messages -

Ate you using IE7?
Try going to View | Current View while in a mail box and unchecking Group by
conversation.

I still think it's Norton Anti-Spam since you did have a rule put there by
Norton. I also bet that the rule is back. I can't tell you how to turn off
Anti-spam because I don't allow Norton or McAfee into the building, but it
shouldn't be hard. Unfortunately, I also don't know much about IMAP
accounts, so I don't know what the next step is.

The Group Messages by conversation question was because of something I've
seen in OE6 only when IE7 is installed, so if you never had that checked and
don't have IE7 it's irrelevant.

I'm using OE6, and I never use the 'Group by Conversation' View - it is
unchecked. I feel as if I'm deliberately trying to be hard to get along
with
:-)

I have an IMAP account, and I notice that as OE checks for messages the
IMAP
Inbox momentarily 'bolds' and a '1' appears in parentheses as though
there's
a new message - at the same moment as the icon appears and the sound would
play if I hadn't turned it off. It 'unbolds' and the (1) disappears
immediately. The POP3 Inbox doesn't change at all.

Is that a helpful clue...? I don't think this used to happen before last
week when I loaded Norton 2007 (or something else happened - maybe a
recent
MS upgrade...?)

Thanks Frank. The message rule hasn't reappeared - I was so hoping it would
so I'd know who to be annoyed at.

I guess I'm at the end of this thread? Think I'll uninstall Norton and see
what happens. Thank you for paying such close attention...

So I just ignored this for awhile and now the problem has resolved! Wish
that happened in real life.

There've been several 'automatic' updates, both from Microsoft and from
Symantec. I like to think one of them solved my problem - but it would be so
nice to have had some acknowledgement that there WAS a problem.

Not to worry - case closed....
