When I get an e-mail message and a given (blue) hyperlink in it, I can click
on again and again, but the hyperlink does not get me where it promises to
take me.

I have no other problems. Do you know what I need to do?

I believe someone could write a thesis on the topic of a question that
has already been asked hundreds of times in a newsgroup. People tend to
ask the same question over and over without first consulting the
newsgroup to see if their question has already been asked and answered.
Yet we know that after a certain amount of time, the question will stop
being asked.

How does the group collectively decide to stop asking the question? What
is the process by which a large and disparate group of people somehow
arrive at same conclusion? Clearly they are finding the answer to the
question otherwise...where? and what triggers this process?

Since you crossposted to IE General, is IE7 installed?

What happens when you /do/ click on such a link?

Make IE the default browser.
Is IE7 installed?

If IE7 is not installed try this:
From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol (NOT URL:Internet Shortcut)
and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Select 'open'.
Click Edit.

"Application used to perform this action" should read:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
(Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the
double quotes.)

DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:

#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)

#4
WWW_OpenURL

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy should be the same.

Sometimes it is necessary to uncheck Use DDE.

If that doesn't fix it, go to Start | Run and type

regsvr32 urlmon.dll
