Default Message Rules Questions

I cannot permanantly remove old message rules I have for some reason. I
click on remove and click apply etc but when I go back they are still there.

What would the procedure be for establishing a rule for deleting messages
from people that aren't in my address book.

Thanks

Kathy

Default Message Rules Questions

Do you want to remove all of your old message rules?

The Message Rules key may be corrupted.

With OE closed, go to Start | Run and type in:

regedit

and navigate to this key:

|--HKEY_CURRENT_USER
|-----Identities
|--------{GUID}
|-----------Software
|--------------Microsoft
|-----------------Outlook Express
|--------------------5.0

where GUID is the Global Unique IDentifier for your Identity, under that key
you will find the following sub-keys, among others:

|-----------------------Block Senders
|-----------------------Rules
|-----------------------Signatures

Select the Rules Key and delete it. You will have to re-create your rules,
but they should work after you do.

If you only want to remove some, you /may/ be able to remove them
individually in the right hand pane after you click on Rules. But if the
registry key is damaged, you will have to do the above.

When that is resolved, make sure to reboot before creating new rules.

Message Rule to allow only people in my Address Book.

Tools | Options | Message Rules | Mail | New.

Box 1 - Where the From line contains people {check it}
Box 2 - Delete from server {check it}
Box 3 - Click on the blue words Contains People

Left click on the top address and hold the mouse key down and drag the
cursor to the last address. This will highlight them all. Right click on
them and click on From in the menu that appears.

Now click Options and Choose: Message *does not contain* the people below in
the top Options box, and choose: Message matches any one of the people below
in the bottom Options box.

OK your way out of the new rule.

Now, only addresses you entered will be downloaded. You will not see any
other e-mail.

Don't forget, if you add someone to your Address Book, you will have to add
them to the rule. It will not be added automatically.

Be sure to see these links for more options.

Are you using an antivirus program to scan your emails?

Default Message Rules Questions

After making any changes to the Message Rules or Blocked Sender list,
you must use the OK button to close the main dialog that shows the list
of message rules or blocked senders. If you use the Cancel button or
the X to close that dialog, the changes you just made are thrown away.

In Outlook Express there is no option to check the address book. You
can create message rules where the FROM does Not contain specific e-mail
addresses then Delete from server. However, you will have to manually
keep the message rule list of addresses up-to-date independent of any
changes you make to the address book. Note the any rules with a action
of Delete from server or Do not download must be at the top of the
messages rules in order to work or a prior rule might trigger the
message to download.
