You may only need to compact your folders, but do all of the following.
Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}. And backup often. ![]() Thanks but now I have even another problem. I cannot open OE at all. Here are the two messages that I am getting. "Outlook Express could not be started. The application was unable to open the Outlook Express message store. Your computer may be out of memory or your disk is full. Contact Microsoft support for further assistance. (0x800C013B)" The other message: "Outlook Express could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be initiated. Outlook Express may not be installed correctly." Now what do I do? I did have Norton email scanning turned on. Does that mean, if and when I get this going again I should turn off incoming scanning as well as outgoing? Thanks for your help and I will keep the information you have given me previously. However, right now I can't even access it. When you get to that point, turn off e-mail scanning altogether. The
problems it causes is numerous, including wiping out folders. The other components of your up to date anti-virus will continue to protect you. The error message (0x800C013B) generally means you have a corrupt Sent Items folder. But first things first. From: http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/directdb.htm Errors in DIRECTDB.DLL or MSOE.DLL generally indicate corruption in the message store. Start by moving Folders.dbx to an empty Windows folder. You will lose your folder hierarchy and the lists of newsgroups on the news servers, but it might get you into OE. Note: The DBX file are hidden files in Win2K, WinXP and Win2K03. If that doesn't do it then move all of the DBX files to the same folder as Folders.dbx. You should now get into OE. Try importing the messages from the folder you moved the DBX files to. If you can't, you can use one of these tools to extract the messages: DBXtract: http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx DBXpress: {much faster for large files} http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/Default.aspx Note: It can take a long time (days with really large folders). The messages can then be dragged from the Windows folder back into a folder in an open instance of OE. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "meema" wrote in message ... Bruce,
With all due respect, I think a Restart may be in order first?; it doesn't sound like the OP Has restarted recently - and of course minor glitches can tend to slowly expand... ![]() After I sent the last message I was able to open OE. I put the folder in the OE folder. However, many of the folders that I once had are gone and I have messages I thought I had gotten rid of months ago. I still have the original problem of not being alble to reply or create messages. -- meema ------------------------------------------------------------------------ meema's Profile: http://www.officehelp.in/member.php?userid=5456 View this thread: http://www.officehelp.in/showthread.php?t=1282044 Posted from - http://www.officehelp.in |

![]() Problem solved. After doing the first thing you said to do OE opened. Then I used the software that I purchased called ScanDBX. It kept saying it had found and fixed the problem and I "might" need to reboot. Well, since it didn't say specifically to reboot I didn't. So, nothing happened. Finally, out of desperation I rebooted and now I can reply and send email. I do have some folders that I deleted a long time ago and email from as far back as 2004 that I know I had deleted. But, whatever, it works and I can delete the old emails. I have turned off Norton email scanning and will leave it off. So I need spam protection and, if so, is there one that doesn't cause problems? Thanks for all your help.
