Default OE6.0 compact question

I compact folders each night manually in OE and have never had any issues
with this procedure. The folders compress and that's it.
Just tonight, OE started copying all the dbx files to the recycle bin as I
manually compress. They show up there with a BAK extension.
Can anyone shed any light on this for me. I don't think I've changed any
settings and this has never happened before.
If possible I need to know what's happening and why and how to correct it if
it's an issue please.
Thank you
Dudley Henriques
