Default msimn error

My OE is periodically shutting down due to this error. This happened to me a
few years ago, and when I fixed it, I also lost everything in all files. I
also lost everything in my "inbox" last week after I rebooted. I went to the
MS help page after googling "msimn error" and found what I think is a fix,
but discovered something else. I wanted to see whether my files were "read
only" so I followed the instructions by searching for the dbx files. When I
found these, I right clicked on [inbox] and then clicked on properties. The
"archive" box was checked at the bottom and it said the file size was 720MB.
I have very few messages in my "inbox" and know that the files in there are
no where near this size. It seems that it contains every email I have ever
received. I'm thinking that is where the "archive" issue might come into
play. How do you access these emails if they have been archived?? Should I
have the "read only" box checked?? There is also an [inbox1] in there right
below the other [inbox] that has 360MB of memory being used. I tried double
clicking on these two and a box appeared asking me what program did I want to
use to open these up. I have no idea. I'm thinking that the size of these
two files is giving me the problems and would like to delete what is in there.

Any help would be much appreciated. TIA

Backup your messages first.

Backup & Resto
http://www.insideoutlookexpress.com/backup/

Or:

Outlook Express Quick Backup (OEQB):
http://www.oehelp.com/OEBackup/Default.aspx

Now, compact your folders.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed. Reboot.

General precautions for Outlook Express:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your
mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

If you still have problems, post the entire error message and your Windows
version.

Default msimn error

Mr. Hagen - Earlier this month I had posted a question about an error message
I was getting after checking OE for any activity. Then, recently I saw the
posting of this msimn error (same as I was having) and read your general
precautions on OE. The unchecking of compacting messages in the background
seems to have cleared up my getting the error message I was getting. Thank
you.

Default msimn error

You're welcome. There's a wealth of information to be gained just by reading
these posts.

Compact messages in the background was removed with XP/SP2 because if you
shut down your computer, or closed OE, while compacting was in progress, you
would likely lose messages, or entire folders. The bad thing was that you
didn't know that OE was compacting.

As you read, compact your folders manually while working offline. How often
depends on how much mail you receive and delete or move. For the average
user, about once a week is plenty sufficient. And getting OEQB is a very
good idea.
