FWIW I took Ron's advice of Edit, Catch Up without thinking and it certainly
corrected the issue, and of course showed all messages as read. My initial response meant that Tools/Get Next nnn headers did not yield additional posts ie all were downloaded. I have recently also noticed that some posts within a watched thread are not shown in Red. So maybe there was some other problem. Again only in xp general, which I imagine is one of the largest groups. So, its still a mystery to me - and one which would be near impossible to replicate. But it was only a nuisance. Thanks to all.
