... From: "Shaz" | Hi | | I have two hard drives on my computer and was wanting to keep purely | programs on one and data on the other. | | Is it possible to install outlook express on drive A, but have the emails | saved on drive b? | | Many thanks | Shaz Expressing this as "...outlook express on drive A, but have the emails saved on drive b?" Is NOT good. Drive A and and B are floppies so the use of this nomenclature will cause confusion. What you are asking is... "...Outlook Express on drive "C:", but have the emails saved on drive "D:" ?" The answer is YES. By defaultt and design, Outlook Express (OE) resides in... "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express" What you want is the data directory to be on drive "D:" (or other hard disk or partition). Create a folder on Drive "D:" such as OE-Data ( D:\OE-Data ) Go to; Tools -- Options -- maintenance -- store folder -- change Browse to; D:\OE-Data BTW: This is exactly what I do on my computers. -- Dave http://www.claymania.com/removal-trojan-adware.html http://www.ik-cs.com/got-a-virus.htm Be very careful that the folder exists before telling OE to change. "Be very careful that the folder exists before telling OE to change. If you click Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder | Change and tell it to change to D:\OE-Data and you have not already created D:\OE-Data then you will lose all saved messages." so if I have already had outlook express running on drive c (for Davids sake!), so have all my emails on that drive, if I create a new directory....it will automatically move my previous emails across?? Am I understanding this correctly? Shaz "Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE/WM" wrote: "David H. Lipman" wrote in message ... | also, If I format my computer....what files do I save, in order to bring them | across to OE once my computer is up and running? | I assume you mean format drive "C:" and reinstall the OS on drive "C:" The information on the OE account and the location of the OE data is stored in the User's Registry. Such as... HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Account Manager HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities Therefore you need to make sure the user's Registry is backed up. "C:\Documents and Settings\USER_ACCOUNT\NTUSER.DAT" I think that's needlessly complex as one can Export Internet Accounts. The Export (and Import) function for Accounts is just not in the main Export and Import submenu (in the File menu), but in the Accounts... submenu (in the Tools menu). (It's a little strange that File-Import allows to Import non-OE accounts, but not OE ones and File-Export has no selection for exporting accounts. But I guess there's GUIs and there's consistency and one doesn't neccessarily imply the other! :-)) |

True, but one will most likely have to *selectively* restore (parts of) the Registry, because it's unlikely that the re-installed (not restored) system will have the exact same configuration as the flattened system. Selectively restoring (parts of) the Registry is not something which most users are able to do. Just (I)MO and my EUR 0.02. |

Am I understanding this correctly? Shaz Yes, do as Frank says. Create the folder you want to move the mail folders to BEFORE you tell OE to change the store folder. It would be wise to make a backup anyway before moving the folders. The following link gives instructions for backing up whether for formatting the hard drive or as routine manintenance. Most of those "in the know" would make regular backups of their OE in case of problems. Another safe way is to create a new identity and import. That way you keep your old message folders until you have verified that the replacement is intact. -- Regards.
