Hi

I have two hard drives on my computer and was wanting to keep purely
programs on one and data on the other.

Is it possible to install outlook express on drive A, but have the emails
saved on drive b?

confusion.

What you are asking is...

"...Outlook Express on drive "C:", but have the emails saved on drive "D:" ?"
The answer is YES.

By defaultt and design, Outlook Express (OE) resides in...
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express"

What you want is the data directory to be on drive "D:" (or other hard disk or partition).

Create a folder on Drive "D:" such as OE-Data ( D:\OE-Data )

Go to; Tools -- Options -- maintenance -- store folder -- change

Browse to; D:\OE-Data

BTW: This is exactly what I do on my computers.

change to D:\OE-Data and you have not already created D:\OE-Data then you
will lose all saved messages.

so if I have already had outlook express running on drive c (for Davids
sake!), so have all my emails on that drive, if I create a new
directory....it will automatically move my previous emails across?? Am I
understanding this correctly?

also, If I format my computer....what files do I save, in order to bring them
across to OE once my computer is up and running?

Yes, do as Frank says. Create the folder you want to move the mail folders
to BEFORE you tell OE to change the store folder.

It would be wise to make a backup anyway before moving the folders. The
following link gives instructions for backing up whether for formatting the
hard drive or as routine manintenance. Most of those "in the know" would
make regular backups of their OE in case of problems. I do mine once a week.

I have several partitions devoted to individual Outlook Express
identities and have never created folders to place them in. I just
relocate the store folder complete with messages.

Another safe way is to create a new identity and import. That way you
keep
your old message folders until you have verified that the replacement is
intact.

Good advice, but IMO it would be better to instruct people to *browse*
(by clicking the "Change..." button) to the new directory, i.e. *not*
*type* its name in the box. If they browse, the mentioned (message-loss)
problem can't occur.

Another minor nit: AFAIK, it's actually "then you will lose all saved
messages as soon as you exit an restart OE", because the move will not
occur until OE is restarted. But it's probably best not to confuse
people with these details.
