Well, I should have paid more attention to a proper method to backup my IE6
stuff. I did in fact save the store folders in the identity files- several were there including one for each of several old email addresses and one set up just for newsgroups. At first I thought I could just drop them all into the freshly formatted hard drive's location for the identities for IE 6- but that didn't work. So, I created new identities, then copied all the files in the old identities into the new identity's folder. This worked fine accept for the newsgroups. I had printed out http://www.insideoe.com/backup/ some months ago and on that print out I see that newsgroups can't be imported. I see that currently at that URL, a new clone method is available. So, yuh, when I tried copying newsgroup files from that identity into a new identify, the appeared to copy over, at first, but can't be seen in the new identify, then they vanish from the window showing the files in the new identity. At this point, is there any easy way to restore my long list of newsgroups? It's not that big a deal, I can simply resubscribe one at a time, but I had subscribed to several dozen. Newsgroups neither import nor export. Sorry, but the developers at
Microsoft consider the information in those newsgroups to be of short duration use or value and have never listened to any request to have them available for import/export. -- Jim Pickering, MVP/Windows Mail applications Please reply ONLY to newsgroup. Actually, I don't care about the messages in those folders- if there are
any, what I'm interested in is simply not having to resubscribe to several dozen newsgroups- I'm not saving the messages- if only MS could allow the list of subscribed newsgroups- then, of course, we'd need to enter each group as if for the first time, then do a "catch up" to get back to where we want to be. In OE, Tools, Accounts, News, Export.
In the new OE, Tools, Accounts, News, Import. This gets the subscribed newsgroups to the new OE. You have to export and import for each Identity. You could export the Registry keys as described in http://www.insideoe.com/backup/ -- Ronald Sommer "Joe" wrote in message ... : Actually, I don't care about the messages in those folders- if there are : any, what I'm interested in is simply not having to resubscribe to several : dozen newsgroups- I'm not saving the messages- if only MS could allow the : list of subscribed newsgroups- then, of course, we'd need to enter each : group as if for the first time, then do a "catch up" to get back to where we : want to be. : : Joe : : : "Jim Pickering" jimp (AT) mvps.org wrote in message : ... : Newsgroups neither import nor export. What does File, Import, News Account Settings do? Not something I have tried but the next paragraph comes from help. It is probably just another way to access the option in Tools, Accounts etc. Newsgroup account settings: From an existing e-mail account. When you import your newsroup account settings into Outlook Express, your subscription records and other data, such as which messages you've seen, is placed into your Outlook Express newsgroup account. You can immediately pick up reading your newsgroups. Do you need to Export? With messages you just import. I am wondering what this phrase "such as which messages you've seen" means? It seems to contradict what Jim Pickering said earlier in this thread. Until I read this note in Help I believed what Jim said to be true. I might test during the coming week. -- Regards. Move the messages in each newsgroup folder to a user created Local Folder and you will then be able to use Import. -- Hope this helps.
