Default Can't subscribe to newsgroup

How can I subscribe to alt.windows-xp on certain news servers?
some news servers carry both:

alt.windows-XP 0000000689 0000000622 y
alt.windows-xp 0000041454 0000039481 y

The 'XP' group is listed first on certain news servers, and OE doesn't
show the latter newsgroup in the list because it isn't case sensitive.

OE *is* case sensitive regarding newsgroup names.
To prove this just type Ctrl-w and an uppercase letter
which you know matches some newsgroups' lowercase letters.

This isn't a problem on most other news servers either because the
uppercase group isn't carried, or if it is, the lowercase group comes
first on the list, and so OE shows that one and not the other.

If the list is sorted alphabetically the uppercase could come first,
even before *any* other lowercase names having the same lowercase prefix.

What do you see if you type just the lowercase prefix portion of the name?
If there is still more than a screenfull of newsgroup names then be sure
to scroll to the bottom to know what all else is present.

alt.windows-xp 0000068297 0000068000 y
alt.windows-XP 0000001408 0000001390 y

When I add an account for a server that lists the lowercase group
first, I can subscribe to it, and the uppercase group is not shown.

But I want to subscribe to the lowercase group on news servers that
have the uppercase group coming first in their lists.

Can I edit a Outlook Express file and replace XP with xp?

Are you saying that there is only a problem with subscribing to
such a newsgroup or are you thinking that you can't even browse one?

If a server carries a particular newsgroup and it is your default news server
you should be able to open it simply by entering news: prefixing that
newsgroup name.

I just proved that using netcap and testing with news:microsoft.public.TEST
E.g. that URL was entered from an IE window and the netcap trace proved
that it went out unchanged. The server of course returned 411 no such newsgroup

I think you may want to check your assumptions and reanalyse
your symptoms.

Good luck

It doesn't really matter whether Outlook Express treats newsgroup names
as case sensitive. The news server is supposed to be case insensitive
on newsgroup names.

There should not be both an alt.windows-XP and alt.windows-xp newsgroup
on the server. There should be only one and it should have all the
messages from all capitalization variations for the newsgroup from any
news server feeds.
