I run XP Pro SP2 with IE7 and OE6. When I compacted my mail folders on 21 Dec
a number of my personal mail folders no longer displayed in my Local Folders on the main (Inbox) screen. All my Personal folders in alphabetical order starting with, "Jokes Etc" are no longer displayed. I therefore can no longer open them, or transfer new messages into them. All the "disappeared" personal mail folders are still present in the Store Folder. Now, the, "Jokes Etc" folder is quite large (~550Mb), and I have an inkling that might be something to do with the problem. My Question: HOW can I get renewed access to the now non-displaying mail folders. All mail files are present in the Recycle Bin as .BAK files. Can anybody help? -- Roger B, Australia |

Copied and Taken from
Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Shell/User, Security), Aumha.org VSOP, DTS-L.org General OE Caveats: - Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose. = hint - Empty Deleted Items folder daily. - Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm. - Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only). - Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection. -- -- Peter Please Reply to Newsgroup for the benefit of others Requests for assistance by email can not and will not be acknowledged. I carried out the sequence of actions as indicated by Frank Saunders.
Unfortunately, nothing changed; the newly created, "same name" folders remained empty. Any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated. -- Roger B, Australia "Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE/WM" wrote: "Roger B" wrote in message ... I run XP Pro SP2 with IE7 and OE6. Do you have BAK files of the missing folders in the Recycle Bin? If you do:
All e-mail items may be missing when you start Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918069 To restore a bak folder to the message store folder, first close OE and locate the Message Store in Windows Explorer. Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V will put the location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer. In WinXP, the .dbx files are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options | View. In Windows Explorer, click on the dbx file for the missing, or empty, folder and drag it to the Desktop. It can be deleted later once you have successfully restored the bak file. Minimize the Message Store. Open OE and, if the folder is missing, create a folder with the *exact* same name as the bak file you want to restore but without the .bak. Eg: If the file is Saved.bak, the new folder should be named Saved. Open the new folder and then close OE. If the folder is there, but just empty, continue on to the next step. Open the Recycle bin and right click on the bak file for the folder in question and click Restore. Open the Message Store back up and change the file extension from .bak to .dbx. Close the Message Store and open OE. The messages should now be back in the folder. If the messages are successfully restored, you can go ahead and delete the old dbx file that you moved to the Desktop. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Roger B" wrote in message ...
