Default OE Email Send Problem

I have WinXP, IE 7and my ISP is AT&T Yahoo. I have always had Outlook
Express as my default email but also use my Yahoo email. A week ago, I
found I could not send email in OE. I can receive email and my newsgroups
work just fine. When I first click on my email a box comes up that says I
am not connected and to retry. After I retry, I am connected. When I try
to send an email, I get an error.
The connection to the server has failed,
Account:"POP.prodigy.yahoo.com'Server:'smtp.prodig y.yahoo.com',Protocol:SMTP,
Port:25, Secure(SSL):NO, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number 0x800CCC0E

I have cleaned my temp. files, compacted, my virus scan does not scan my
emails. I don't know what else to do and hope someone will enlighten me.
Thanks for your help.

Default OE Email Send Problem

10061 = Connection refused.

Do you have SMTP Authentication enabled? In OE this is specified in
Tools, Accounts, Mail, Properties, Servers, Outgoing Mail Server, My
Server Requires Authentication.

Are you using a dial-up connection?

In Tools, Accounts, Mail, do you have more than one mail account set up?

Default OE Email Send Problem

Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It provides no
additional protection and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

paste
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

Default OE Email Send Problem

Check with your ISP for the current, correct settings (SBC/Global purchased
Prodigy years ago SBC then purchased the vestiges of ATT.net and rebranded
itself as AT&T).

Then again...

My virus does not scan my email, I
have that turned off.

Having it enabled may have damaged your current identity. Try the account
in a new Named Identity (File Identities Add new identity). Assuming
all is well, (1) compact all folders in the old identity, (2) import
messages from the old identity into the new one, and then (3) delete the old
one (File Identities Manage Identities).

To avoid such corruption in futu

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is
automatically compacting your message store.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.
