When I start OE6, it appears to open, the folder list shows, the individual
folders such as Inbox indicate the proper number of new messages (I know this because I can get to the messages by signing in to Windows Live Messenger which in turn allows me to see the HotMail inbox), the "Working Online" icon shows, but the screen is "locked" up. The little working hourglass shows, but you can't click on anything. And after a while the title says "not responding" and you must shut OE6 down to proceed with anything else. I do have two active Office Outlook@Live accounts which are duly paid for. (I have two hotmail accounts) There appears to be no way to activate any of the menu items such as Tools so I can't get to accounts or options. Any suggestions would be appreciated. This a newer home computer running XP2 Media Edition. The OE6 works Ok on several other computers that I have in the office |

A failure to start usually means that the database of messages is partially
corrupted. First, you need to determine the folder location of your message store. To determine the message store folder location if OE cannot be opened, look in the registry under this key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID} Where GUID above is the key for each identity. If unsure, double click each GUID to check the username involved, then expand the key further for that particular user to \Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0 (clicking on the 5.0 to expand it) and look at the value in the "StoreRoot" key in the right hand pane. (And write down that location for reference.) You can then create a folder on any drive (I use "C:\Mail" to eliminate confusion) and enter that value vs. your real location in the registry, close the registry editor and see if Outlook Express will now open. If so, you can attempt to import your mail messages from the old message store (you did write down the location, right?) and see if that succeeds. If it still fails, or not all the mail messages import correctly, you may need to obtain a 3rd party tool to extract the contents from the store folder as EML files which can then be dragged/dropped into a local mail folder. Post back if you continue to have problems or need more help. Good luck. -- Jim Pickering, MVP/Windows Mail applications Please reply ONLY to newsgroup. I found the message store folder and moved all the files (*.dbx) to a
separate folder. I did this for both identities. Then tryed to start OE6. I got the same "locked up" screens as before. Checking the targeted message store folders, I find that OE6 has recreated new dbx files of what looks like initialized sizes. So I don't think the problem is corrupted message data bases. I put the original files back where they came from. Do you have another suggestion? "Jim Pickering" wrote: A failure to start usually means that the database of messages is partially corrupted. Was Outlook Express closed during this manipulation of the value in the
registry? Since you say Outlook Express can be opened, try as a first action on opening, click on File/Work Offline and follow that up with File/Folder/Compact all Folders and let it run to completion. After that, try creating a new identity and switch to it, creating your mail account and test that all works. If satisfactory, you can later import your mail messages from the old, problem identity. -- Jim Pickering MVP-Windows Mail applications Please reply only to the newsgroup.
