I have been using the POP3 feature of Hotmail on server
http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp for years on both a paid subscription account and a legacy accout. I just installed IE7 and now the Hotmail password is not accepted. I have another computer that is still using IE6 and OE6 and it still accesses the POP3 server without problems. I have checked the conguration of OE and it is the same on both computers. Any suggestions? |

The server you mentioned and/or accessed is an http server, not Pop3.
All pop3 legacy accounts require a pop3 and smtp server neither of which can use the server you posted. Legacy pop3 accounts can be accessed three ways: a. The web interface at hotmail.com b. A pop3 compatible email client(e.g. OE or OL or Vista Windows Mail,) c. OE or OL via setting up an http account For item(c) only: 1. The server for msn.com legacy pop3 accounts to access via OE/OL using an http server is : http://oe.msn.msnmail.hotmail.com/cgi-bin/hmdata 2. For Hotmail.com grandfathered or premium accounts the server is: http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp Note: if you had a pop3 account and converted it to an http via installation of msn explorer or cancelled the legacy pop3 account(which automatically converted it to a hotmail free account) it cannot use pop3/smtp settings thus only item(a) and item(c) are applicable. Note 2: If you've have a pop3 account and wish to access via the pop3/smtp server(applicable only to item (b), then read the threads posted in PA Bear's link below paying particular attention to the discussion on the revised pop3/smtp/SSL/SPA/Incoming Server 995 changes for legacy pop3 accounts. Even though the changes were to have been effective Feb 1 '07, not all accounts or servers are ready to accept the new settings. Due to all the confusion surrounding legacy pop3 accounts(all are msn.com) and http accounts using Live Mail, Live Mail Desktop, OE, OL(accounts are either hotmail.com or msn.com) it can be difficult to wade through all the puddles, thus the first rule would be to determine which kind of account you have use the correct settings and protocol. ...winston "PA Bear" wrote in message ... : X-post to MSN Discussion : : See these discussions: http://snipurl.com/19euz : -- : ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) : MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) : : kreiwitt wrote: : I have been using the POP3 feature of Hotmail on server : http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp : for years on both a paid subscription account and a legacy accout. This suggestion fixed the problem. Unfortunately my search of the MS
knowledge base did not return the useful info you provided - one would think that patches such as this would be included in the latest version of the downloads. That's why us volunteers are here. To pick up the slack. That said, a MU or
WU update may not be the way to address the problem since many users do not use Hotmail, myself included. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "kreiwitt" wrote in message ... Windows Update should've offered 904942 as an Optional Update.

I had mentioned the problem with Hotmail, but my POP mail from my ISP
provider had the same problem. The fix you recommended solved both issues. Anyway, I appreciate the time you "volunteers" spend helping out the rest of us.
