Default OE takes minutes to show first message (reading hard disk)

Days ago started to experiment an extremely annoying situation in OE.
I launch and to show the message selected takes minutes (2 to 6), instead
displaying it right away the hard disk "works" and I have to wait minutes
before
it comes responsive.

HD is defragmented and folders are compressed. It's not dependant of 1
particular
message and happens daily.

I switch to other folders and some works fine without delay, some takes
loooong time
to show the message, then comes responsive.

What can I do?

OE 6, Win xp pro, 512 mb ram

You say it doesn't happen in other folders, but you don't mention the folder
it is happening in. If it is the Inbox, Move all messages you want to save
from the Inbox to a local folder you create and then delete the Inbox.dbx
with OE closed.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of
your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder
location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V will put the
location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write
the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer.

In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options
Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View.

With OE closed, find the DBX file for the folder in question {Inbox.dbx} and
delete it. A new one will be created automatically when you open OE.

General precautions for Outlook Express:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your
mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

And backup often.

Thanks Bruce. It happens in any custom folder, no matter what.
And I don't use inbox, I use my owns with rules moving messages to those, in
general.
So creating all folders agains seems like a lot of work and I'm not sure
that be the cause...

Does this only happen when OE is downloading messages, and the folders open
OK after that?

No, it doesn't happen when downloading messages. It happens with
already downloaded messages stored in any folder. I don't think AV
has something to do. It worked ok 2 weeks ago with AV installed...

See if anything here helps:
http://www.insideoe.com/problems/performance.htm

Also, You may have a damaged identity especially if it is the default Main
Identity. File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create a new one and test it.
If all is well, you can import your messages and Address Book from the old
identity and delete it.
