Default AVG

I've been using the free version for a few years. Based on advice from this
group, I disabled the e-mail scanner and the AVG icon in the notification
area is greyed out.

The AVG version expires in a few days and I downloaded the new version. The
e-mail scanner is still disabled and the icon is still greyed out. But now
when downloading e-mail, a second icon appears, fully colored, and there is
a balloon which says "AVG E-mail scanner AutoPOP3 Downloading Message #xx."

What changed? What does this mean? Should I be doing anything?

Reinstall AVG and choose Custom Mode. Uncheck E-mail Scanning when you see
that option. For some reason, just unchecking it in the security center
causes a conflict with the Windows Security Center.

Make sure you reboot when you're done.

If you don't have V7.5 yet.

Bruce,

Thank you. Yes, this was 7.5 that I just downloaded. When you say reinstall
it, do you mean to download it again? Rerun the .exe program? Would I have
to uninstall it or delete it first? I'm sure it's not necessary to mention
that I'm not very computer-savvy.

Yes. Remove it from Add/Remove Programs. Reboot and download & install it
again. When you see the option, choose Custom Mode and when you get to it,
uncheck E-mail Scanning.

FWIW, when you download any program like this, save it to a folder and run
it from there. That way you can reinstall it from the folder and not have to
go back to the Website all the time.

Default AVG

Bruce,

Today when I booted up there was the first (I think) automatic update of 7.5
since I downloaded it. Now the icon is in full color, whereas it had been
greyed out.

On the AVG control center window it says at the top that I am fully
protected. All the listed features have the check mark encased in green,
whereas before, the e-mail was in red and I was getting warnings that items
highlighted in red were something or other (I forgot the wording). Despite
the check mark in green, the status of the e-mail scanner says it's not
installed. And I'm not getting ballons when I download mail.

The bottom line is that there seems to be mixed signals here and I'm not
sure which ones supersede the others.

Mine are all green, but it says E-mail scanning not installed. If everything
is otherwise OK, just chalk it up to AVG's attempt to be confusing like OE.
