My sister has a new PC (supplied by Dell), no scary software downloads but 36
months Mcafee supplied as part of the package. Every time I configure her
Outlook Express 6 the mail works fine. However when you re-boot the PC the
incoming mail server defaults to 127.0.0.1 - loopback. I've done this
repeatedly with the same result every time, her ISP blames Mcafee but I do
not understand how the firewall would actually modify the incoming mail
server settings.

Also from one of the accounts I've set up on her machine it simply will not
send at all. I've checked the accounts on web mail and all appears fine, I've
checked the firewall and full access is permitted, have even switched it off
but no change.

Have I made a basic error or is it about time to consider un-installing and
re-installing OE6. Advice would be appreciated.

This is caused by the incoming and outgoing email scanning from MacAfee that you have enabled. Disable the email scanning both in outgoing and incoming email and it will solve your issue. You will still be protected .. This scanning is only another layer on top of the scan.

This is caused by the Spamkiller application. If you don't want it to happen
then you would have to uninstall Spamkiller.

Your basic error is allowing McAfee to scan email. Disable AV email
scanning
and all will be well.

Alternatively, you can try and finagle the McAfee configuration, but I
won't
have McAfee on any machine I use. Nor Norton; in fact, on two HP Pavilions
that I recenly set up, I not only did not activate the included NAV, I
used
Add/Remove programs to uninstall them before doing anything else.

One of those computers is now running Grisoft AVG (free, v.7.5), and the
other is running Alwil Avast. Each was installed using the "Custom"
option,
and each was installed _without_ the email scanning component.

Perhaps, but in this case McAfee's VirusScan does not do that, only
Spamkiller.

Isn't that nice? Maybe you can explain to people why McAfee (and all the
other av and anti-spam vendors) never test your software, especially since
it results in huge message loss and disfunctionality for OE users over the
last 10 years? Or do you people test it and just dont give a hoot?

I don't think anyone cares that you change to 124.0.0.1, what they care
about is you have screwed up their system with your SUCKY software over the
years giving the Windows client, and especially OE, users a hideous
experience, of which your company has extensive experience.

Peter, I recall you solving your problem by disabling McAfee SpamKiller.
Since you are a volunteer for McAfee, you should realize that **everyone**
here is also a volunteer.

My standard reply says that this problem can be caused by either e-mail
scanning, or a spam program.

Don't give all the *credit* to McAfee. Norton does not work well with OE
either.

Regardless of the E-mail program I choose to use, I would ///NEVER/// use
any program from McAfee, or Symantec.

As far as the settings being changed to 127.0.0.1, any e-mail scanning, or
anti-spam program can cause this to happen in OE.

I'd wish I could blame it all on one program/manufacturer, but it can happen
with them all.
