Default Outlook express 6.0

I have been using Outlook Express for several years. Suddenly, I can't
receive any mail after I did a backup of my messages. I don't have a problem
when using Outlook. However, I like OE better for email. How can I remove and
re-install OE 6.0? Updating doesn't solve the problem.

Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.

Reinstalling won't help. What happens if you send yourself an e-mail? Any
error message?

Thank you for trying to help.

I can send messages in OE 6 to anyone and receive a test message to myself.
I don't receive any other messages in my Inbox. I can send and receive
messages in other email boxes I have. It is always the same message: An
unknown error has occurred. Account: 'Bellsouth Mail', Server: 'localhost',
Protocol: POP3, Port: 38444, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800C0133.

First: Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Servers Tab. Make sure the
Pop3 and SMTP settings are correct.

Second: Error Number: 0x800C0133 generally means you have a corrupt Inbox.

Move any mail you wish to save to a local folder you create. Then:

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of
your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder
location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V will put the
location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write
the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer.

In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3 the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options |
View.

With OE closed, find the DBX file for the folder in question {Inbox.dbx} and
delete it. A new one will be created automatically when you open OE.

General precautions for Outlook Express:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your
mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

BTY, are you sure Bellsouth wants you to use port 38444? I have never seen
that before.

Your Anti-virus (or anti-spam) software changes the POP3 server name to
localhost in order to scan the e-mail as it downloads. If this prevents
you from downloading mail, then that software is malfunctioning. Check
with that software manufacturer for update or configuration help, or
disable that software from scanning e-mail.

As long as your anti-virus software is set to scan files as they are
opened, scanning e-mail as it downloads is unnecessary and prone to
problems.

To manually change the POP3 server in Outlook Express, go to Tools,
Accounts, Mail, Properties, Servers.

Please start your own post and explain exactly what you want to do. Tagging
on to someone else's post makes things confusing down the road.

It sounds like you want to divert messages to specific user created folders,
but your post is not quite clear.

Try Tools | Message Rules and set up a rule to divert messages to different
folders. See http://www.mindspring.com/~oe_oh and the sections on message
rules.
