Default Outlook Express

I am using Outlook Express 6.0 with 2 hotmail accounts. When the program is
first loaded it will send/receive emails and will continue to do this.
However during the day there comes a time when if the Send/Receive button is
clicked the task menu freezes and the program will not check for emails. I
then have to close the program and restart the computer. How can I overcome
this problem
