Default In 'Format Background' problems

When attempting to insert sounds, I do as indicated, I select 'Format';
'Background'; 'Sound' and under 'Browse' show location of sound file.
I have done this successfully before but (suspect IE 7.0) this no longer
works. Also when attempting to insert sounds, I do as indicated, I select
'Format'; 'Background'; 'Picture' and under 'Browse' show location of GIF
file.
I can do this successfully but again (suspect IE 7.0) I can only insert one
picture file as putting in another replaces the first.
Keeping the picture and text separate is a problem as they over write.
Any suggestions as to how to correct???

Is it possible that you're trying to use the wrong type of sound file?
"Background Sound" works only with .wav or .midi sound files.

When you use FORMAT | BACKGROUND | PICTURE, the picture will over-write text
or anything else in the message area. That's the way it works. It produces
a BACKGROUND for your message.
If you wish to insert a picture, select INSERT *not* FORMAT.
Click on the location in your message area where you wish the picture to be
inserted, *THEN* click INSERT | PICTURE | BROWSE.

Good Luck.

Andy, I believe you solved my Picture problem. I did not mention this, but
occasionally when I load a Picture as Background, when sending, it gives an
error message that the file cannot be found and cannot be sent (even though
it loads it in the current message). Is there a certain Directory these
files should reside in??
The sound remains a problem. I was attempting to load a MID file, (I have
many) and I have used successfully in the past, but they no longer work. I
tried an old WMA just now and it works fine. I used the Wincows Media Player
ver 11 to check the MID file and it plays fine.
Can the Windows Media Player ver 11 be used to change the extension?

There is no special directory for files for INSERT.

My mistake there! For BACKGROUND sound, I should have included .wma. I too
find that only some of my .mid files work as BACKGROUND. Some don't.
I don't think changing the file extension in WMP 11 would be effective.

Good Luck.

I can't speak from experience, but if you are having a problem using Format
| Background | Sound, and it is a MIDI, or WAV, /and/ this started after
WMP 11 was installed, check the Media Player newsgroup. There have been some
reported *bugs* with that update.

Hi Bruce,

My problem with .mid files and background sound does seem to have started
since installing WMP11. Thanks for suggesting the WMP NG. I found one post
referring to this problem with .mid files there, dated 2/24/2007, but there
has been no response.........

Send yourself a message using Format | Background | Sound and include a
midi. Then see if the size of the message indicates it was embedded in the
message. If its embedded then the volume level probably got set very small.
Compose a new message and insert the sound and then go to View | Source Edit
and then click on the Source tab to show the source code. Find the BGSOUND
element and in it is the volume= setting. Set that to zero (which is max).
It was probably set to -9000 or something and is mute. Then check the
volume settings for your devices under Control Panel | Sounds to fix it.

Steve, I checked the BGSOUND and found it set to -9600. I changed that to 0
per your suggestion, corrected the volume settings, and WALLA it makes sound.
TNX, I would have never found that.

Hi Steve,

The problem with "midis as Background sound" was CONTROL PANEL | SOUNDS &
AUDIO DEVICES | AUDIO | MIDI music playback | VOLUME | SW Synth (The volume
slider here was set to minimum.)

Many Thanks.
