I'm having a problem sending out email. I can receive it fine. Anything that
goes to my outbox just hangs up until it times out with a SMTP server didn't respond in the allotted time message. I checked with my provider and they say since I can make it work from their website it has to be on my computer. They suggested I unload and reload Internet Explorer. I did that and it worked for about 2 weeks. Since it's stopped again I've tried to reload to no avail. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. |

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs, slows down sending and receiving, and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes and has even been responsible for lose of messages. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 If that does not resolve the issue, please post the entire error message. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "JarheadRon" wrote in message ... Do you find a bunch of BAK files in your Recycle Bin?
See http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?p=135065#135065; also see the Notes section of the following KB article for an explanation of sorts: All e-mail items may be missing when you start Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 [NB: Despite what the KB article might imply, you do NOT need to install KB918766!] http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918069 To restore a BAK file in the Recycle Bin to your store folder: 1. Tools Options Maintenance Store folder will reveal the location of your current Identity's store (http://www.insideoe.com/files/store.htm#storemain). Write it down. [In WinXP, Win2K and Win2K03, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are marked as hidden by default. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders via Start Control Panel Folder Options View.] 2a. Close OE. 2b. In Windows Explorer, navigate to your store Click on the DBX file associated with the missing, or empty, folder (e.g., Inbox.dbx) and Move (drag) it to your desktop for safety's sake. 3. Minimize the store folder. 4. Open OE: - If the folder in question is missing, create a new folder with the same name as the one you want to restore (e.g., if the file to restore is Saved.bak, name the new folder Saved). Open the new folder (important!) and then close OE. - If the folder is still there (e.g., Saved.dbx) but just empty, continue to Step 5. 5a. Close OE. 5b. Open the Recycle Bin and right-click on the BAK file you want to restore (e.g, Saved.bak) and select Restore. Now re-open your store folder and rename the file, replacing the BAK extension with DBX (e.g., rename Saved.bak to Saved.dbx). 6. Close Windows Explorer, open OE and you should find your messages have been restored to the folder in question. 7. Assuming all is well, you may now delete the DBX file that you moved to the desktop in Step 2 above. If, however, the folder is still empty, run this recovery tool of MVP Steve Cochran's on the DBX file that you moved to the desktop in Step 2 above: DBXpress http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/Default.aspx Also see http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx (#2 and #4) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Avoiding Such Corruption in Futu - Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose. - Empty Deleted Items folder daily. - Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm - WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is automatically compacting your message store. - Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) A A wrote: PLEASE HELP ME, I AM JUST USING THIS PARTICULAR SPOT TO OBTAIN HELP. Bruce,
Sorry I didn't get yhe notification that a message had been posted on my original question so I resubmitted it. I tried what you suggested and it's still not working. The only security I have running now is Microsoft's Security Center and Virus Protection is turned off. Sorry, I can't figure out how to copy and paste the error messages so I'll type them. The error I'm getting is as follows: Your SMTP server has not responded in 90 seconds. Would you like to wait another 90 seconds for the server to respond? Account: pop3.mail.wowway.com Server:smtp.mail.wowway.com I get the option to wait or stop. When I click on stop the following apprears: Connecting to 'pop3.mail.wowway.com' The Tasks tab is sellected and under Tasks is Send 1 message(s) using 'pop3.mail.wowway.com' Status is Executing and Connection is Local Area Network. I have the option to Hide, Stop or Details. If I let it go it just keeps retrying to send. If I click Stop I get: A time-out occurred while communicating with the server. Account: 'pop3.mail.wowway.com', Server: 'smtp.mail.wowway.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC19. Thanks for your help! Norman,
My SMTP server name is correct. this is the error message I get after I'm flagged with the message that the SMTP server hasn't responded in 90 seconds and I click Stop: A time-out occurred while communicating with the server. Account: 'pop3.mail.wowway.com', Server: 'smtp.mail.wowway.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC19. The strange part is that it worked for a couple of weeks after I first reloaded IE7. Thanks for your help. "N. You are the one who switched away from Comcast to Wide Open West... Did you read the responses to this post you made? | X-WBNR-Posting-Host: 24.192.115.172 | Subject: Can't send email | Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2007 17:30:03 -0800 | Message-ID: So which server is named in the error? Did you change from 'smtp.comcast.net' to whatever is the right name for the WOW SMTP server? Do you have an anti virus program set up to scan email? Have you reinstalled the AV program, *without* the email scanner? You won't fix your problem by reloading the MSFT software because the MSFT software *isn't* the problem. -- Norman ~Shine, bright morning light, ~now in the air the spring is coming. ~Sweet, blowing wind, ~singing down the hills and valleys. |
