Default Recovering deleted files

I do not know how to find out what version I have of outlook express!

I inadvertently permanently deleted the messages from my Deleted Files
folder in outlook express. Although they are in my mail store, I cannot open
them. I have tried Windows explorer to get them back, but with no luck. I
have deleted e-mails, which I need. I must be going daft!! Help!!

Default Recovering deleted files

Never store messages in any default OE folder. Especially in a garbage pail.

Check your Recycle Bin for a Deleted Items.bak file. Maybe you'll get lucky.

If not:

Thank you, Bruce, for your time and expertise. Surely there is a free
program from microsoft for this? There is no guarantee with the website you
gave. The deleted file is in my mail box, but it will not open. It is
large (says 14,000 somethings). I don't know how to transfer it back into
outlook express "deleted files" folder. Sorry for bothering you again, but I
cannot find any help in the Microsoft help pages

What mail box? What file? Do you mean you found the dbx file but /that/
won't open? It's not meant to.

You can try this freeware tool. I have never used it myself, and there is no
guarantee with any recovery tool.
