I have been running OE6 for several years trouble free. About two months
ago, I started getting multiple copie (up to 10 sometimes) of the same messages in my Inbox, but I haven't made any changes to OE. The box on the Advanced tab of the email account "Properties" that says "Leave a copy of messages on server" has never been checked. I have been running Cloudmark to detect spam (and it works great), and AVG Free to detect viruses, both of which seem fine. My ISP watched the messages on their server while I watched them download onto my computer, but they didn't get deleted from the server for some time. A typical event will show emails downloading (1 of 33, for example) from my ISP, then ten minutes later the same emails will download, plus any new ones. Eventually the copies stop, but it's a pain. What's the best solution here? I'd like to keep my present messages and data. Thanks, Mark |

Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Advanced. Uncheck: Leave a copy of
messages on the server. Then delete the Pop3uidl.dbx file. You will get the messages one more time, but that should be it. Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V will put the location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer. In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View. With OE closed, find the DBX file for the folder in question {Pop3uidl.dbx} and delete it. A new one will be created automatically when you open OE. General precautions for Outlook Express: Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}. A further note when using AVG. Reinstall AVG and choose Custom Mode. Uncheck E-mail Scanning when you see that option. For some reason, just unchecking it in the security center causes a conflict with the Windows Security Center. Make sure you reboot when you're done. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "King Triton" King wrote in message ... I have been running OE6 for several years trouble free. I have tried the fix within OE6 suggested by Bruce, and I removed AVG, but
I'm still having the problem. Cloudmark is still active, but I find it valuable for filtering out the spam emails, as I get tons of them. I tried re-installing Cloudmark to clean things up, but it didn't work. It seems odd that this would start all of a sudden. (I failed to mention earlier that I'm running Win XP.) "Steve Cochran" wrote: Its probably Cloudmark. I think its been reported to cause troubles in OE. AVG will also if its set to scan email. It sounds like the user's Inbox has become corrupted somehow and should be
deleted while empty and let OE rebuild an Inbox next time it is started. "King Triton" wrote in message ... From what has been posted in this newsgroup before, I don't think you will
get OE functioning properly as long as you have Cloudmark installed. sorry, steve "King Triton" wrote in message ... Uninstall Cloudmark and see if the problem stops.
