My Outlook Express 6 emails have been going blank after Outlook has been
running a few hours. I click on different inbox messages and they are all blank. I close Outlook and restart it and everything is back to normal. No error message is given by Outlook. Has anyone encountered this and been able to solve it? I have 2 Outlook accounts and automatic Windows XP Home updates. |

General precautions for Outlook Express:
Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}. And backup often. Backup & Resto http://www.insideoutlookexpress.com/backup/ This is a great two click program: Outlook Express Quick Backup (OEQB) http://www.oehelp.com/OEBackup/Default.aspx If still no joy: You may have a damaged identity especially if it is the default Main Identity. File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create a new one and test it. If all is well, you can import your messages and Address Book from the old identity and delete it. Hello,
Try clearing your Internet temporary files. Outlook Express message appears blank and has an ATT000XX.txt or an ATT000XX.htm attachment http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312351 -- Singapore Web Design http://www.bootstrike.com/Webdesign/ Singapore Web Hosting "puzzledinmn" wrote in message ... I had over 1GB in "temporary" Internet files! OE and IE7 both seem to work great now that I deleted them. After going to IE7 the only changes were upgrading to Norton IS 2006 and playing music a lot on the site Wolfgang's Vault. I will be more diligent hitting the delete button. The quick back up for OE was slick too. Thanks to Singaporewebdesign and Bruce! |

I upgraded my system to 640MB of RAM from 256 and this problem is back in
spades. It occurs faster(30 min. or so) now and seems to occur most often after I switch accounts. I am getting hangs on the first IE7 tab too. I am giving my computer the three fingered salute quite often to kill OE6 and IE7 and then restart them. A friend said he had to switch to Firefox and Thunderbird to use his computer. I tested the new RAM with Dell Bios Diagnostics and MemTest. |

Outlook Express hung this morning, immediately following an identity switch.
All I could do was switch between message headings (the messages were blank). I had to kill it using the task manager. Only one minimized IE7 window(no tabs) was also running. Reducing the temporary internet files to 50MB hasn't helped. None of my other programs has hung. |

Did you disable your anti-virus from scanning e-mail as Bruce suggested?
The e-mail scanning by anti-virus programs can cause all sorts of havoc, much of it random. In particular, there have been a number of reports of Norton causing OE too hang intermittently on an identity switch. Also, if you are running any anti-spam software on your PC disable that. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "puzzledinmn" wrote in message ... Even though the diagnostics didn't catch anything, the RAM may still be
defective or marginal. I would try swapping the RAM cards and also try cutting back the amount of RAM. If either of those improves the situation, that would point to the RAM as the issue. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "puzzledinmn" wrote in message ...
