Hi all. I am so mystified. Suddenly two days ago Word attachments I
opened and read in Outlook Express and then closed moved to the following path: C:\WINDOWS\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\ (then an odd number supplied by the computer such as 096BSXQR - name of file). When I go to Word to open the attachment, unless I have saved it deliberately in a sub-file or My Docs, I get a long error message saying that the doc. name or path is invalid, etc., etc. I don't understand how or why this happened. I would just like to get my OE working again. Any help/thoughts will be very much appreciated. Peggy Nielsen |

Hi Peggy,
The problem might be resolved simply by deleting temporary Internet files (Internet Explorer or Control Panel). It may be more complex, however. To fully explore the possibilities more information will be needed, and a Word group would probably be a better place to find the answer. What version of Word created the file? What version of Word are you using? What is your browser version? -- Tim K. aka Kuay Tim MS-MVP - Outlook Express Lynnwood, WA * "PeggyN" wrote in message oups.com... Hi all. I am so mystified. ![]() Thanks Tim and Pa- I've been to the Word group and got no help there. So I thought I'd attack this from the OE Express side. Word 2002 is the version. I'm running Win. XP and IE 6. The sending Word version is also Word 2002 - I've sent docs to myself and the program does the same thing. Pa, you are right - I can simply reopen the file and save it where I want it, but I thought if anybody could tell me how to solve this problem, I'd get rid of the annoyance. Peggy Nielsen |

Hi Peggy,
What you describe is the way my Word, version 2001, works. When one opens .doc attachment within Outlook Express, the doc file is assigned a location in one of windows Temporary Internet Folders.. As long as the attachment is open within Outlook the doc file will be in that location, close the doc attachment, Outlook Express upon closing removes/clears that temp file location. The reason Word cannot find the file. If you want Word to use this location, Open the attachment within Outlook Express, Do Not Close the open attachment. Now close Outlook Express, then close the open attachment. Word can now open the document because Outlook Express couldn't remove it from windows Temporary Internet Folder when it was closed. Temporary Internet Folders is not a good place to store Word documents, if after opening a doc attachment within Outlook Express and you want to save it, in what ever program the attachment was opened with choose Save As and select a location of your choice. That's the way ALL attachments work in OE.
Whenever you open an attachment in OE, it saves a TEMPORARY copy of the attachment in the IE Temporary Internet Files (TIF), then launches the appropriate program passing the saved attachment name so that you can OPEN (view) the attachment. When you move on to the next message, OE will attempt to delete that TIF copy. It won't be able to if the opening application still has the file locked. If you want to update that attachment, the intended way to handle this is either save the attachment first (e.g. File, Save Attachments or any of several other ways), then open the saved attachment in your application, or if you open from with OE, use the File, Save AS in the application rather than simple Save. Under no circumstances can you update the attachment embedded in the original message. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "PeggyN" wrote in message oups.com... Hi all. Ken and Michael-Thanks so much for your answers. I can work with the
OE attchmt. procedure now that I understand it. So, it's not going to be an ongoing problem for me. But, (perhaps the question is not worth looking into), why did this happen suddenly? I've had my current computer for over 2 years and have changed little, only an occasional update. No serious changes. Peggy Nielsen |

The way it's working now is the way it should have been working all
along. It's been that way since at least IE5. As I recall, the IE3 Internet Mail and News used to use the Windows TEMP folder rather than the IE Temporary Internet files (TIF). I don't recall whether OE4 was the first version to use the TIF or still did it the IE3 way. As for what may have changed, maybe the order that you do things in. If you open DOC from OE, update it, close the DOC in WORD, then in OE switch to another message, OE will delete the updated DOC from the TIF. If you open the DOC from OE, then switch to another message, then close the DOC in Word, the delete by OE will fail because WORD has the DOC file locked. So if you later open Word and use the recent files, the updated DOC will still be accessible. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "PeggyN" wrote in message oups.com...
