The issue of AVG being greyed out after email scanning has been turned off,
Gem "PA Bear" wrote in message ... What issue? -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin; DTS-L.org "Gemma" wrote in message ... Thanks, that solved my issue with AVG. Gem. "PA Bear" wrote in message ... What I don't understand is why this is only happening with one person receiving my e-mails. Is it possible that he also has set up to scan the e-mails, and when both sender and recipient are doing that, things go bananas. Absolutely. NB: If you disable AVG AV's Email Scanning, WinXP Security Center won't like it and the AVG AV icon in Notification Area will remain grayed-out until you re-enable it. The workaround would be to uninstall AVG AV (make sure you have your key handy) and then reinstall it, selecting a Custom install and opting-out of installing Email Scanning component. I no longer recommend any version of AVG AV now, Ron. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin; DTS-L.org Ron Hirsch wrote: Thanks for the reply. I checked over my system, and sent several test message to myself and others, but they all were fine. Suddenly after a few weeks of this, everything returned to normal at his end - my end was normal for receiving and sending, all through this. And things have stayed normal since then. I didn't make any changes to my system or settings during all this period, as I couldn't find anything wrong anywhere. Today, a different one of my very computer savvy friends reported the same situation. My HTML messages to him were coming through in plain text, and had the tons of HTML garbage coding visible in the text. He also always works in HTML mode. He clicked on "reply", and the window that came up was in plain text. When he tried to switch to HTML mode, it refused to do so. So I went to another one of my machines, generated a similar HTML message, with a jpg image in it, and sent it to him, and a copy to myself. This time, his copy and my copy both arrived fine - HTML all the way. I'm at a loss to understand what is happening, and what the fix might be. Right now, his machine is the only machine I've sent to which shows this problem. But when I sent to him from a different machine - all was well. So obviously, there must be some setting on my main machine that's related to the problem - but it isn't a problem for anyone else I send to. Does anyone have any ideas - Ron Hirsch |

After I disabled the outgoing AVG e-mail scanning, I noticed that on my next
bootup it had reset itself to back on. Then it dawned on me that since I installed the latest version of Spyware Doctor a short time ago, it now was adding a tag line at the bottom of mesages that I sent, stating that it had scanned the message also. And this was something new - that I hadn't seen before. Unlike AVG, disabling this inn Spyware Doctor did not get it "upset" at all. I then sent a message off to my friend who was having all the problems with my mail, and it went through fine. So it seems that the problem was related to a double scan at my end, coupled with whatever he was doing at his end. Hopefully all is now back on track. Thanks to all who participated in helping me with this situation. Ron Hirsch |

Hi Frank,
Thanks for the info. With the plethora of "security" software needed these days to keep the *******s out there from infecting the public, it can get difficult to keep things in order. When I went to install a new version/update of Zone Alarm recently, I got an error message at the start, that my version of Spyware Doctor was not compatible with the new ZA, and that I should get the latest upgrade. I had this upgrade, and was planning installing it next. So I then installed it first, and the new ZA installed properly. I wish MS would get rid of the Registry. It seems to me that each program should keep its own "stuff" in its installation floder/tree. The Registry is so fraught with complexities that it can get to be a real PITA, and very difficult to keep clean and organized. If MS wants the Registry for the OS, so be it. But for other software - who wants it? Maybe in the future, when hybrid HD's start to flourish, the Registry will get replaced with something better. I do plan on going back to plain text, in my general e-mail messages, except for those occasions when I want to include images and the like in the message. Thanks again - Ron Hirsch +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ "Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE/WM" wrote in message ... "Ron Hirsch" wrote in message ...
